ASUS Eee PC 4G - Linux - Pearl White
So what can be said about this tha hasn't been said?

As the head of a media technology production company, I have been lucky to use and own a variety of cool machines over the years, from the first Amiga computer and the video toaster, to PC's, Macs, early Avid video edit systems, DAT recorders, mini-disc recorders, film look video and now hi-def video. Once in a while a device comes along that redefines the paradigm for its prodcut catagory. The video toaster was one such device for video, and years later so was the Avid. Of course the ipod was one such device (I owned a hard drive based mp3 player BEFORE the ipod was created).

This device has redefined the paradigm for portable computing. That's it, plain and simple. Having just come back from a business trip where I brought my fairly big bulky laptop that I only used for email, I can easily embrace the pragmatism of this device.

And, as a Linux user for many years, I think the decision to install a custom Linux distribution

I rate this highly simply because it fullfilled my original requirement for a very compact, lightweight, wi-fi computer. Specifically for travelling with a vacation trailer. It also has a very sturdy case. I have no needs of a business or corporate commuter, so the installed programs and memory are fine. I use can use thumb drives and now digital cameras have 4 gig memory cards. I love the way it searches for existing wi-fi signals and it saves the ones you have used. I did hook it up to my desktop moniter at home for trial purposes, and worked just fine. It seems to process quickly; I did not install Windows XP. Lack of an internal drive is a trade off but Targus Brand has some USB port powered models.Asus Eee PC 4G Surf (7" Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Pure White

I've never been a fan of Linux because it is so difficult to install new programs. You don't have the ease of the way it's done in OSX or Windows. I'm a Mac person, and I have a Macbook Pro and a Powerbook G4 (12" cutie). I got the EEE to stash in my office case to use in a pinch, when I wanted to connect "anywhere". I've only had it a few days but I can tell you two very important facts. One, the Linux version installed on it is super and gives you a program for just about anything you would need. After all, this is not intended to replace your main computer. Two, I typed up a document in Open Office and I went to print it and amazingly the EEE had already detected and immediately printed to my home network printer, a Canon IP5200R. With my Macs (and my brother's HP) we had to hook up the printer with a cable to set it up first. The EEE simply knew it was there. I was aghast with delightful amazement.

If you bought the EEE for what it was intended- as a second or third laptop that can,

I bought my Asus Eee with the 4GB memory and webcam, because I was concerned about the 2GB models because their memory can't be upgraded. Well using this model for a week now I can tell you if you are going to use this for web surfing and intend to keep the existing Linux software, get the 2gb model and save yourself a $100 bucks. The built in FireFox browser works on every website, the pages load fast, and I set it to automatically connect to my wireless network when I turn on the laptop. As for me, I love this machine and the existing Linux software works ok, but I will be loading XP on it. I miss my Windows!! Asus gives exact directions in their manual to do this and the XP drivers are on the Asus Eee website. Some interesting points:

1.Pressing F9 when starting the machine will set the machine to factory default. Comes in handy if you use a password and lose it!

2. SM Player works ok but jitters slightly when playing AVI files. You may not notice this, but I do and it bugs me. You

ASUS Eee PC 4G - Linux - Pearl White
I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE this tough little computer. It handles everything that the larger computers can handle. Although my computer contains 4GB (some have 2GB and 8GM), I have my 8 GB or 16GB digital card available to insert, if necessary. I can also move information to a jump drive by utilizing one of the three ports built in, and then save my 8GB or 16GB digital SD cards for larger volumes. The Eee PC 4GB can also handle "portable ports," allowing access to 4-6 additional ports! The Eee PC also has access to virus protection. Another great feature of the Eee PC computer is that it displays a full screen with readable Micrsoft Works font. Still, another wonderful feature of this computer is that it is compatible with the two other computers and the printers in my house, and I can access and send emails and attachments from "my documents." The Eee PC is easy to use when taking notes at meetings, fitting on one's lap without overheating. The great battery life (2-3 hours) allows plenty of time

ASUS Eee PC 4G - Linux - Pearl White
This computer really meets my needs! I needed something that was easy to travel with, that I could take notes on, and have a place to dump my audio and picture files. It doesn't do everything, but it does a lot! Because this little PC fit inside my pocketbook, that's all I had to take on the plane (instead of taking a carry-on bag with CDs and other entertainment). All my music easily fit on the computer with plenty of room to spare. It was so nice to be able to just whip out the computer from my bag and check email at the airport while waiting. It's really cute too and makes a great conversation piece. It made my day when geeks gathered round ooo'ing and ah'ing over my new gadget!

On the downside, the keyboard needs to be addressed. It's not so much the size of the keys, but the touch. I'm a decent typist and I found it hard to build up to a rhythm because of the keys. The touch isn't sensitive enough.

The Eee PC does load up SD cards (though not all, I had to bring along my card reader

I've had my Asus eeePC, lovingly named Eeep, for about 5 weeks. I love it, as it does all that I need quickly, easily, and with style.

I videoed my excited opening of the box with my Flip Camera while on speakerphone with my friend. I would have posted that as part of my review, but all I did was squeal, which turns out to be irriating to watch.

STRAIGHT out of the box, literally, this little booger started working (insert squeal). I pulled out the laptop, the battery and the power cord, plugged it in, waited approximately 15 seconds and DING! there was the setup wizard. I ran around the house frantically looking for my atomic clock so I could be sure to set the time right (only to realize days later that it works on 24 hour time - be aware of that when you set up), clicked a few buttons and voila! I'm on. And I'm even on my house wireless! NO WAY! It took nothing to set this up.

Eeep runs Linux which, if you want to delve deep into it, has a steep learning curve. On the other hand,

ASUS Eee PC 4G - Linux - Pearl White
I finallly got one with some discount. I installed Win XP.

Good: Light weight. Easy to carry. It runs some of my Java development tools with no problem!
Bad: In terms of power, it can not compare to, or even close to a normal laptop at the similar price range. Battery life is shorter than advised. Keyboard is not designed for typing a lot of stuff. CPU won't reach 900mHz unless you overclock it. Temperature a bit high after a while. Card reader is slow and not quite stable (I added a ADATA 8G SD. It happened once that the card became unavailable during normal use, and I had to reboot twice.). Web browser seems to be slow.

I never got a chance to use it out of my house yet. The only advantage is that it is portable.

I picked this up about a week ago and can't say enough good things about it. It does everything I'd expected and more. It has a beautiful, but small screen. The keyboard is a little cramped, but after an hour or so of use, I am fine with it.
It seems to recognize every USB device I've connected so far. I've tweaked the heck out of it adding a few apps like emulators and a different email client. Today I used it to make a skype call using the built in mike. Later I made a video call with it to my kid's grandfather using the built in webcam and skype. I stream video and music from my pc when I'm at home and it works perfectly.
If you're on the fence, don't wait. Pick this up, you won't regret it.

I like this one because of its light weight, overall design, and Linux operating system.

Many people in the reviews think it is very cheap. I don't agree. This little laptop is a low-end laptop. The company announced at the beginning that it started at $199. The lowest priced we see is actually $299 (2G surf). The flash drive could be very expensive based on the company's pricing strategy. If you look at the market, there are other brands coming. e.g., Everex Cloudbook, which does not look as good as this one, but is much more powerful at the same price. I'd expect a price drop soon.

On the surface, this is a VERY good product. It's size and features make it superb for common uses.

The memory compartment on the bottom is sealed, I broke the seal just to see what was under there. I don't think it is appropriate for commodity PC products to be sealed in this manner.

I took it to school but the school network doesn't support linux. I think more people should buy these and demand open networks! Microsoft doesn't deserve to own the world.

Konqueror is better than firefox. I wish I could pick the browser.
There doesn't seem to be a SMTP mail client.

Finally, to get to the guts of the machine, you need to open the file manager, and create a link in your "my home" directory to /user/bin/xterm.
You can then use this new icon to access otherwise hidden features of your machine such as SSH and a unix shell.

Got this for school/work and it is a perfect secondary computer. Strong pickup for wireless signals and so easy to use. Love it. If you need extra memory, get a flash drive, but the Eee has plenty for what I use it for. It fits in my purse and starts up in seconds so I can just pull it out and start writing any of the dozen term papers I have due at any given time.

This is a pretty nifty gadget, the Eee PC. I have got it a few days ago and had the chance to fool around with it for a while.
It's an excellent product for what it is--a cheap, featherweight laptop. The closest competitor of this caliber, or at least this size, easily jump above and beyond 1 grand. From that alone, it's a standout--and in a class of its own.
I have not had a chance to play with the operating system it came with; I had a tweaked copy of Windows XP as soon as I received it. The NAND storage is fast and silent, as noted by lack of noise from disk spinning. However, it is not exceptionally fast--it just has a much better access time, and read and write rates are not spectacular. On a slimmed down Windows, though, it loads relatively quickly--within 1 minute. Installing firewall and antivirus slowed the system down by quite a bit.
Everything on this system is tiny. Unless you plan on hooking the system up to an external monitor--Eee PC thankfully has a VGA port--you

Forget about the iPhone or the IPod Touch--this gizmo has them beat for new gadgets!

We bought the 8 GB in white for our teen daughter for Christmas. She wanted an iPhone (ha!) but we knew this would serve her much better and she is happy that we surprised her with this little monster machine....

Our family travels all over the world and this machine is PERFECT for international travel. It is light, well-built, sturdy, and does everything you could want it to do (short of film and graphics editing). The internal wireless is super strong and picks up signals farther away than my Sony Vaio laptop. Because it is Linux loaded it is lightening fast for startup and loading of pages.

We just finished a 3 day road trip and we brought an inverter so daughter could work on her EeePC in the car. She went from watching videos and listening to music (all stored on memory SD cards) to playing games to making meal/toilet stops at Starbucks/Panera/McDoanld's where she logged ont to the internet.

I just had my Eee PC, explored the most obvious: Office documents, Internet connection, Adobe Reader, file manager, media players etc.. All function right out of the box (except for the wireless network, see later). External hardware were connected without difficulty (mouse, external hard drives, USBs etc.), the construction of the body seems stronger than my laptop PCs, the weight is lighter than most of my hardback textbooks. I like the most the size of the machine, it fits right on my crowded desk area. I can read PDF documents on the Eee PC (save trees) while hand-writing or taking notes. The machine serves as a handy dictionary or encyclopedia also, that saves me some additional $$. However since the icons on the Eee PC are small, jumping between applications is hard. But it doesn't bother me since I will use it mostly for PDF eBooks.

Connection to home wireless network took me some effort though, here is my hint: since it is a Linux machine, when you connect to a home wireless network,

I have only had my eee pc for about 4 days, during this time I have been remarkably impressed by all that it is capable of!
I already own 3 laptops of varying sizes, different operating systems, all windows, and was worried about the learning curve to go to linux. If you are wondering DON'T, this is the easiest operating system that I have ever seen, I have been a computer tech for over 17 years, and even I was scared of linux, please do not be, this is very easy to use. I have even started using some of the free help forums for the eee pc, no, not cause something wrong, but because I want to know everything this great little laptop can do.
By the way, I have shown mine to 14 people since I got it in the mail, ALL of them want one, 4 have gone ahead and gotten their own!
I really believe with all the knowledge that I have about pcs, that this is the best ultra portable you can get, even at twice the money, get it, you will love it to.
