ASUS EEE PC 4G Ultra 7" Linux Micro Notebook - Pearl White
i have to say that i am pleased with my 4G. it performed out of the box as expected. i had an issue with touch typing on the keyboard but i am getting used to its smaller footprint. i would recommend it highly as a second computing device because of its small size and light weight rather than hauling around a notebook computer for travel or sitting in a coffee shop. but also, if all you do is email, surf, and want to do some light word processing, spreadsheet, or other office work, offload digital pix off of your memory card or digital camera, or even listen to your music or video, this will fit the bill nicely as your main computing device. it really is a sweet machine and was what i would have wanted my PDA to be when i used one in the past. it is a functional device that works well, i highly recommend the 4G.

First, if reading amazon reviews be careful. Amazon has combined the reviews of all of the eee pc models and they all don't have the same abilities. As an example there is no webcam on the surf models and the 2G models are missing software that is included on larger more expensive models.

This is a review for the 2G Surf model. I bought the green one.

This little PC is a very nice light travel tool. It is between a PDA and a laptop computer. It will do most of what you expect a business / web pc to do

The browser installed is Firefox. Most of the web tools are just links to web pages in firefox. Just about anything you can do in firefox you can do with the eee pc on the web. I have surfed to several web pages. Most of them sized themselves satisfactorily for the 800x480 screen. You can get more screen real estate by pressing F11 which hides most of the toolbars (this works in any browser, not just firefox on the eee). I increased the default text size a bit.

Open Office is

This is a review of the Eee PC 4G, black with Linux.

I am very happy with this computer! It is small, but the screen is very nice despite my concern regarding the 800x480 resolution. The size is just fine, and I have little hands, so they fit the keyboard without a problem. It has just what I need - word processing and web access! Not at all my main computer, but one that I can carry with me and write where ever I am. I highly recommend!!

I also purchased 1 Gig of memory to replace the 512 that comes with the machine - I got the Crucial 1 GB DDR2-667 Sodimm. Installation was easy (I did it before turning on the machine for the first time) and was recognized without a problem. I saw no reason to get the 2 Gig that Amazon offers with this computer after I learned I would have to do some significant Linux coding to reconfigure the Linux kernel to allow for reconization of the entire 2 Gig. It works just fine with a Gig!

Start up is about 20 seconds, and shut down is about 10

I've been using the 4G Black eee PC for about a month now. Initially, I had a lot of concerns about the size of the monitor and the keyboard, but I'm glad to say that all of these concerns have been relieved! If you have large hands, please don't get this laptop; the keys are small, but for average sized hands, you will probably get used to the size rather quickly. Furthermore, the keyboard has a nice amount of spring to it.

I've been very pleased with this purchase. The laptop is extremely small and is about the size of a thick planner. Bootup takes only a few seconds. Furthermore, the eee is extremely functional. I haven't had any problems or felt any limitations with web-browsing, using openoffice programs, running email client, using Skype; there are a good set of programs already on the machine, but with the eee forums available, you can pretty much install whatever you may need. One feature that I've been particularly taking advantage of is the ability to resize the windows

I got the blue one. It is a really cute small computer. The keyboard takes some time to get used too but it still works. YOU SHOULD BE AWARE THAT NOT ALL PRINTERS WORK WITH THIS KIND OF COMPUTER. And you cannot print directly from an internet page. It has an AMAZING paint program! The cursor is really big compared to the screen. It comes with Powerpoint, Excel, and word (but no times new romans) It weighs two pounds and it gets pretty good internet connection. It DOES NOT have a place to put CDs, just to let you know. It seems to me that this computer is designed for a little kid but I don't really mind. It has a penguin theme. I haven't really had a problem with this computer except that the "l" key sticks some times. The recharger cord even comes with some Velcro to keep the wire wrapped up. How thoughtful! I highly recommend this computer. Actually a couple of days after I received it, I sent a picture of it to my sister and the bought one in pink the next day. I've shown it to all my

As a backpacker, I normally wouldn't carry a laptop with me on the road.
When you're jumping from planes to trains/buses and lugging your entire life in a pack, the last thing you want is a heavy, expensive piece of equipment to slow you down and give you another thing to worry about.

However, I changed my mind when I saw the Asus Eee PC. I bought the 4Gb model and have yet to be disappointed after a month of carrying it around Thailand. At only 2 lbs. and with a power brick the size of a cell phone charger, it barely takes up any room with the rest of my gear. Combine it with a 8Gb SD Card as a secondary Hard Drive and it's perfect for working on documents and photos while travelling. A lot of people have complained about the small screen and keyboard but I've gotten quite used to it.

I take loads of pictures and maintain a travel website. The Eee PC let's me do my work in my hostel room (when there's a free WiFi signal) or transfer it onto a USB key for quick download at an internet

They say great things come in small packages and this is no exception. I'm not now or have I ever been a Linux user so the first thing I did was install windows xp and still had 2gb left. I slapped in a 16 gb SD card and away I went. Not only is it an excellent conversation piece AND puts you in the envy of all your friends but it is everything you could ask for in a laptop.

I love the size when I'm working at lunch because it takes up very little space and then slips nicely into my purse...yes my purse. This is great as well because I don't have to worry about someone seeing a laptop in my car and trying to break in, it's always with me. It's my photo album, day planner, Rolodex, mailbox and work station, not to mention my way to unwind with a few games. The battery last longer than I expected because basically there are no moving parts.

I don't do a lot of typing on it but I can see where that could be a problem if that's what you plan to do with it. The keyboard is quite

Ok, it's not a processing monster but that's not why I bought it.
It's a very affordable, very lightweight alternative to a full-blown laptop. I just need something to take notes on and check email, and lugging around the ol' 7-pounder had gotten rather tedious. This thing is perfect for these simple tasks.

Keyboard:
I'm a thin guy with average sized hands. As such the key size is the *absolute* minimum it could be and still be ok for touch typing and a decent speed. (I believe normal keyboards are somewhat over-sized.)
The quality of the keyboard is surprisingly nice. Almost silent, good solid feel, just the right amount of travel.

Screen:
Yep, it's small alright, both physically and resolution-wise.
Both aspects are tolerable, though I'd willingly pay a bit more for a 9" screen that's 1024 pixels wide. Oh well. Having reached the age where I need glasses for reading I was worried, but all is well. You'd be surprised how easy browsing is on this small of a screen.
The actual

With several new laptops in the office running Vista and XP, and the road warriors that shlep them from city to city just to perform death-by-powerpoint and check email, they all want an eeepc!
It boots in less than half the time, shuts down in seconds, and lasts from Orlando to San Francisco. It plays movies ripped with Handbrake. It plays MP3's. It IM's. It runs Firefox and Thunderbird, speaks IMAP. What's not to like?

I've loaded up eeeXbuntu on mine and have all the 3D Compaz Graphics turned on and it does the full 3D Cube and desktop switching *better* than all the Vista machines! The AC adapter is the same size as the one for my Treo 650.

Only a couple of very, very minor gripes:
-The mouse buttons can be a little cantankerous to click
-it needs a keyboard light

Would I buy another? Heck yes! My kids are going to get one each when they are a little older. Couldn't recommend it enough. 6 stars.

ASUS EEE PC 4G Ultra 7" Linux Micro Notebook - Pearl White
The Asus Eee PC certainly doesn't look as sleek as the ultra portable Macbook Air, but most laptops are not as sleek as Apple or Sony products. Still, the Eee PC is a genuinely ultra-portable everyday workhorse with features, performance, and value that make it a terrific machine. I think the Eee PC is probably one of the best values in computing technology you will ever find.

I bought the black 4 G Surf, which means it has a 4 Gig SSD (drive) and does not come with an onboard web cam. I like this machine. It boots up fast and quietly; when I turn it on its ready for me in 20 seconds. No Windows machine I am aware of can deliver that kind of performance on the hardware the Eee PC runs on.

It comes pre-installed with all the software you need to be productive, which is good since this machine does not have an optical disc drive. To install additional software, you do not have to buy a disc drive; instead, you can connect the Eee PC to a network or the internet using the built-in

So far experience with it has been pretty good. We kept it Linux. It reads shared dirs ok. Everything works fine and it's relatively quick. Only glitch so far is it self set the trackpad to the lowest sensitivity and it was not easy to reset it.
Trick now is will ASUS follow through and support the product.
Needs much more RAM; both as a HD and for RAM.
