I am a quasi-audiophile, and was going to buy a pair of ER5's (or ER6's) to replace these Bose around-ear headphones I'm walking around with, but decided to get these ER-4P's after seeing the rave reviews they were getting. And I must say, anyone who purchases these should heed the following WARNING: PROPER USAGE OF THESE EAR PHONES WITH ANY REASONABLY SOUNDING REPRODUCTION SOURCE MY CAUSE YOU TO REVISIT YOUR ENTIRE MUSIC LIBRARY - they are that good. I listen to a lot of jazz, funk, and dance, and when I'm out and about I use a Creative Zen MP3 player. (The X-Fi 2 version is on order.) These ear plugs do an outstanding job of capturing crisp but not overpowering bass drum and guitar, rich crystal clear highs, and incredibly thorough midranges. I'm truly hearing things I've never heard before in my music. Listen to Marc Antoine's "Foreign Exchange" with these to get a real demonstration of the clear range these things can capture. I too was apprehensive about earplugs but using the right

Over the years, I must have tried literally hundreds of different earphones, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. The in-the-ear style have always been personal favourite due to their sound isolation and discrete size. However, they can be uncomfortable and also have a tendency to work loose in the gym when pounding the treadmill. I even found a hybrid in-the-ear with ear hook arrangement that I thought would be the answer to my prayers but these too have a habit of working loose. I fly a lot with work and therefore also require an earphone that combats the overbearing ambient hum that accompanies air travel. I've tried several makes of noise cancelling earphones but have been left feeling cheated by their tenuous claims. Finally, I demand accurate sound reproduction; being in a band and producing a lot of the tracks myself, I rely on a good sound reference to ensure the final mix is exactly what I require. Wouldn't it be great if I could find a single pair of earphones that would

My main purpose in buying these was to use while playing keyboards in the rock band I'm in. These replaced some molded in-ear monitors I had for years after they finally failed. Besides hearing what I play and sing, I need to mix front of house sound from on-stage. The isolation is incredible and allows me to build a decent mix while being in close proximity of the other members. I do this comfortably without killing my ears. I also use these every morning while watching television while on the treadmill so I don't wake the rest of the family upstairs. I use these while mowing lawn and plug them into an MP3 player. I use them in my studio while recording piano tracks. I've even resorted to using them while mixing down a song at midnight while everyone else was asleep. Bass Response: I've read the controversy on their bass response and I feel they sould disappoint someone who's used to listening to a lot of bass. I'm satisfied with them even if they don't put out as much bass

I had a pair of the ER6's for a year and I tore the flimsy cable when it was caught on a item in my garage. I then purchased the ER4p's. They have a much more durable cable. I run and weight lift with them regularly, the cable noise can be managed by simply wearing it so it doesn't bang. I travel frequently and found them to be good at cutting down ambient noise. The sound quality is accurate. I have worn them for over 6 hours continuously with no problem. It is important to replace the tips and to periodically maintain them, no big deal and not expensive. I recently have lost them after owning them for more than a year. I considered other brands but repurchased a pair of ER4ps.

I got my first ER4S set 10 years ago and a second set a couple of years later to ensure that I would not be without some Etymotics. Both sets are fine after all this time and use but I want a 3rd set, but the next will be the ER-4P!

IMO, the single best thing about the ER4S is their durability. I've literally owned dozens of earphone sets and all but the Etymotics that I continued to use eventually bit the dust. Usually it was a cord discontinuity most likely very near the plug. I've replaced countless cables and plugs, pulling out my soldering iron and rummaging through my collection of parts. Once I got the Etymotics I had put all that behind me. Not once have I had a problem with the ER4S cables or plugs. The only times I have experienced cutout of a channel was when a filter got clogged, which has happened a few times. It's pretty simple to replace a filter, and they give you extra filters and a tool to remove the old filter. I figure I can probably clean the old filters but haven't

What a great product. I spent weeks agonizing over what IEM to buy. I thought about Westone 3's and UM2's, Shure 530's, the Ultimate Ear Triplefl.10 and Superfl.5's, and the Etymotic ER-4P's. I really wrestled with paying $400 for IEM's. I read so many positive reviews of the ER-4P's that I decided to risk it. After all for under $200, the price was definitely right. What a great purchase! Tight bass, brilliant highs, and a great sound stage. They are so comfortable, I couldn't be more pleased.

At the same time I purchased the Monster Beat IEM's for my 16 year old son. He loves them. They do sound good; but, they do not remotely compare to my ER-4P's. I am contemplating a headphone amp for my next purchase to further enhance the listening experience of my Ipod. Although, after this purchase I am not sure it is really needed!

Great job Etymotic!

I purchased these earphones several months ago and couldn't be more satisfied. The clarity and definition is unsurpassed. I recently purchased a headphone amp, and a cable adaptor to render the ER-4P into the ER-4S. The result - Amazing sound!! Very detailed and accurate. Unlike others who state these have no bass, I find the bass to be very tight, giving perfect support to the music. The key is to achieve a good seal with the buds. I use the triple flanges and am able to obtain a great seal. This makes all the difference in sound quality. For the money you can't go wrong with these excellent phones. Well done, Etymotic.

I got these because I have an office mate that types very loudly is always on the phone and is constantly eating.

I haven't heard her at all today.

I'm an audiophile so my standard for audio quality is high. These phones have amongst the best I've ever heard from a headphone. Their sensitivity is extreme I have my volume on about 3% and can hear clearly. So much so that if you put them in a normal computer headphone jack you will hear interference. I highly suggest an external sound card or a highly shielded extension cable. The cable will make noise when you rub it against something so give yourself plenty of slack with the shirt clip.

They take some time to adjust to as far as comfort goes. The longer they are in my ears the more comfortable they get. Make sure you watch the videos for insertion and removal on the Etymotic website and follow it explicitly. You may notice complaints about a weak cord. Those people didn't follow the instructions which tell you exactly how to unseal

I used these in a music studio where I was recording and had the volume up too loud on the pre-amp and made my tinitus worse. By VERY careful about volume. You may think those warning you read about loud volume are overstated and exaggerated, but they are not. Be careful.

Out side of that, these earphones are great. Amazing. Worth the money.

Since I've owned these Red (right) and Blue (left, by process of elimination) jewels (2001 edition...these have braided cords and a synchronized color scheme to totally kill the hyper-GameBoy headphones look), I have yet to find something that feels more like home for the ears. I am an on-again, off-again earphone addict who has yet to find a way to come clean and realize that nothing in the price-range or below (I paid 180 back in the day) beats the ER4ps; Shures like the EC2 and SCL3, Audio Technicas encompassing the ATH-EC7 (my favorite portable choice with a slightly muddied ER4p sound... those hooks just work so well! Vin Diesel agrees in Bablyon A.D. mind you), ATH-CM7, ATH-AD700, numerous Sonys like the EX-90lps, Senns all over the CX300 and PX100 (both nice, but you lose too much sound in the lack of a seal for the PXs), AKGs topping off at the K81djs...nothing ever has outgunned the crystal clean and true output of the ER4ps. I use them mostly with a Sony Mp3 Walkman (the old

I've been enjoying my ER4P's for a couple of years. I recently got a pair of Shure SE530's ($500 retail) and while they are well rounded earphones, nothing I have heard or can even imagine compares when it comes to the clarity coming out of these little wonders. The Shures sound almost muffled after listening to the ER4Ps. The other downside to the Shures is sound leakage. I don't want other people listening to my music and I can rest assured that even with really high sound levels, the ER4Ps allow almost no sound out of your ear canals. Occasionally I wish I got a little more bass from them but the iPhone I use as a source shares some of the responsibility. I have a Sharp minidisc player that delivers very strong and clear bass to the ER4Ps.

First, I'll give you some background.

I'm a student, a former music major (now Biomed engineer). I take my music and the quality of my experience very seriously. (I.e. - nothing under a 320 bit rate and no ipods)

now, it's not all classical music - but all sorts. you name it, i probably have it.

Here are my two cents about this piece. I myself am one of those people who need the foam piece to get a proper, comfortable fit. But once these bad boys are inserted, you pretty much forget that they are in to begin with.

The experience is awesome. It's just clear and precise. exactly what etymotic was gunning for. They don't care about "maximizing bass" or some stupid stuff like that. It's about pure, unadulterated, music. Basically, you're hearing exactly what the composer/artist wants you to hear. You want the bass? Go crank it up yourself on your eq.

I've tried the Shure e2c, the Senn cx300, and the ue5, etymotic er6, even some overheads like the sony and senn hd. What i can tell

Most people I know only have listened to their music with ear buds given to them along with their iPod or some they picked up at Target; the problem is they can listen to their music with these but they can't 'hear' it.

If you've never tried any higher priced headphones you really do not know what you are missing, and if that is the case these are the perfect place to start. I do know there are some people who really don't care but if you're reading this then I'm guessing you care.

There are some reviews (on Amazon and across the web) that talk about how a perfect seal is hard to get and I'm here to tell you (and maybe I'm just special) that it's not (after some practice). Trial and error is the way to go. Put them in, take them out, put them in, take them out. I find it difficult to put them in without moistening them a bit; this makes sliding them in much easier.

When I first got them I was trying to stick them in TOO far because I had read about how hard it was to get the 'proper'

Read any review and you'll see the unmatched quality of the sound reproduction, mids, lows, base.

I was most interested in sound isolation. These don't disappoint! You will not believe what you can achieve with the foam tips. They're rated at 41 - the best earplugs I could find were 33s.

I bought the bose QC3s to test them out: even if you could deal with the ear-drum sucking feeling you'll realize they don't cancel much at all, besides anything in the A/C or airplane frequency; and the sound quality is atrocious compared to these. A cheap pair of sony earbuds will do better than the QC3 or QC2s.

I'm in Manhattan with sirens and horns everywhere. As I prepare for Step 2 (med school boards), I really wish I had these for Step 1. Did I mention they're $200 less than the QC3s?

I recently bought these and the Shure SE210s, so consider this a side by side comparison. I have had both for about a month. Bought one for me, and one for my wife. These are both in the same price range, so I suspect people looking at these would also be looking at the Shures.

Comparison
- overall sound......Etymotic (hands down)
- overall sound......Etymotic (hands down)
- overall sound......Etymotic (hands down)
- midranges..........Etymotic (hands down)
- highs................Etymotic (hands down)
- styling..............Shure
- comfort/fit........Shure
- use during jogging...Shure (with foam tips)

Ok, to be honest, the Shures do sound good and score well in all the intangibles. If you compare them both using the foam tips, the Shures are more comfortable. The Etymotics because of their thin wiring at the earplugs transmit more vibration sound during activities like jogging. The Shures have that dumb extension cord to deal with though.

If your priority is to get top quality

The sound isolation of the ER-4P's is phenominal. I have tried active cancellation over the ear head sets from Aiwa and Bose and have used the active cancellation earbuds from Sony for several years. The ER-4P's go far beyond any of these. Etymotics rates them as 36 db with the 3 flange tips and 42 db using the foam tips. The numbers do not give a sense of how complete the sound isolation really is. On a riding mower, you can hear that the engine is running but there is no need to increase the volume from a comfortable listening level before you started the mower. Just on sond isolation these are better than ear plugs or the best shooter's ear muffs I have ever tried.

My primary motivation may have been sound isolation on airplanes and lawn mowers but the sound quality is also tremendous. They are better than any other headphones I have tried. I am not an audiophile but I can hear the difference between a high bit rate MP3 and the original CD. With the ER-4P's, you can hear all of the

The short and not so sweet- IMO, these earphones are simply not what most of the reviews would suggest. Are they better than earbuds? Yes they are. Are they audiophile quality? Not in the least. The bass response is iffy at best, and they have a tendency to sound overly bright in the high range. I use them with my I pod as most others will, and I import music at 320kbps, so I offer these phones the best opportunity to shine and they have proved to me to be marginal. That said, the price is not ridiculous for what you get but if you are really looking for high end response you will have to look further. I find that many people make up their minds about a product before they buy it, and even in the face of contrasting reality will still swear allegiance to an inferior piece of gear. I am not one of those. You will get what you pay for.

Superb headphones these ER-4P's - beautiful sound isolation and a perfectly balanced tone and sound quality that provides depth and clarity. I owned the Shure E2C headphones prior to these (actually I still own them - problem is the rubber over the wire has split and the actual wires are open to the elements so I thought I'll keep those and use them at the gym and get myself a new even nicer pair of cans - problem with the Shure's is that the wire flexes and fatigues at the same point due to the bending of it behing the ear and then combine that with the terrible case where you wrap the phones which causes even more stress and its no wonder the rubber covering the wiring eventually gave out - as thick as they were!).

Well on to these Ety's - they are awesome! The Shures sounded good - but these Ety's seem to have quite a bit more dynamic range - the Shure's sounded excellent after using standard Ipod or Sony headphones but now these headphones are making the Shure's sound a little flat

I recently purchased a set of ER-4Ps and while the glowing reviews presented here are pretty much justified, I must take issue with a few points. In my experience, these earphones do not have the bass presence that so many reviews mention. I would definitely describe it as anemic. Even bass-heavy music such as drum 'n bass or jungle comes across incredibly weak. It's as if listening to music through a high-pass filter. As a composer/producer, I've listened to a lot of audio transducers and I trust my ears. I am not one of those guys who turns the "bass knob" all the way up and such. I believe in flat frequency reproduction to yield the most accurate representation of the composer's creation.

That said, these largely depend on the style of music you enjoy. I find listening to acoustic music very rewarding with these earphones. Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celeste" has never had such amazing clarity. Bartok's dense weave of strings each find a space in the mix and the dynamic

These are the best headphones that I have ever used. Crisp clear highs, tight balanced lows, and unbelieveable transparency. I have never seen such well built headphones, the cord looks and feels incredibly durable and the shirt clip is not only convenient, it is built to last. Please not that using the clip is necessary to use the headphones, if you don't you will hear far too much microphonics and the cord will pull the headphones from your ears. It should be noted that because these headphones are so good, any issues with the music will be exaggerated. For example, if you must store your MP3's at low quality (less than 256kbps) then these headphones will not give you their full potential and you'd be better off to purchase far less expensive headphones that will not make a mockery of the reduced sound quality.

You should buy these headphones if... you enjoy excellent sounding music, you are willing to sacrifice the overpowering muddied bass you are probably used to, you want to enjoy

Yes, you have to hear them to believe all the hype. I decided to finally make the plunge after auditioning a set owned by my friend - he had spare plugs, don't get grossed out. I find the rubber flanges get a bit uncomfortable in my ears after a while, and don't seal perfectly, so I use the foamies most of the time except when I run. The foamies seal out ALL noise coming through the ear canal. The user manual says 42db reduction and after years wearing every manner of foamies (I'm a helicopter pilot), I believe their claim. Deep rumble on an airplane comes through via bone conduction, so I recommend some inexpensive NR headphones *over* the ER-4P for max airplane effectiveness. The Bose QC2 gives you great sound for airplane use, but you can't use them in quiet environments because of the ever-present hiss.

With the ER-4Ps I'm *spoiled* now. You can hear the internal noise of your computer. I can listen to my iPod with the sound turned down to *zero* - even one segment is enough for quiet
