Looks nice, doesn't run warm.
Lasted 45 days before it started spewing bad sectors. Just outside of Amazon's 30 day return policy.
Now I have to fight through Western Digital support to get a replacement. I would rather have my money back so that I can buy another brand. I hate to support garbage. I normally never buy from Western Digital, but I had hoped that they had changed. Not. I knew better.
I really do have other things to do with my life.
I had a Seagate ST305004FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive fail on me within 2 weeks of purchase. Some whiz-bang of an engineer decided that a hard drive didn't need any ventilation. It's bad when a brand new drive runs too hot to touch, then grinds to a halt, literally.

This hard drive is quiet, small, nice looking, a great price for 1 TB, and so far (just approaching three weeks now) is working flawlessly. But if you are using this hard drive with an Apple Macintosh computer, and you want this hard drive to be able to take advantage of the significant advantages offered by the Mac, before you put this drive to use, make sure that you re-format it (it takes less than a minute) as described by at least one other amazon.com reviewer on these pages. The way you re-format this for the Mac while extremely easy, is not obvious or in just the usual way, and you probably need to look up that advice in these reviews before you waste your time with the more typical Mac formatting processes, which does not work. It's a shame that the instructions don't make clear that 1) This hard drive will work with a Mac with the formatting that comes with the hard drive, but that 2) It is easy and to your advantage to first re-format the drive if you plan to use it with your

I bought this hard drive for my XPS 1530, and it has been nothing but problems. 1/2 the time my computer won't find the device, and if it does it loses connectivity with it. I tried the tech support, but they offered no help. The usb won't even work with the drive. I'm sure they're better drives out there. Take the time and find them. You'll be glad you did.

I just want to write and let the world know what kind of company this is. I have owned 3 Western digital (WD) hard drives. All 3 have not lasted longer then 2 years, the most recent has only lasted 1 yr.. 4 months. But the kicker of this situation is the external hard drive WD make have a warranty of 1 year. but the internal Hard drives that are inside the units have a 3-5 year warranty. So I called WD because the hard drive inside the case went bad. So this is how the call went.
The phone rang, and I got contacted to someone over sea's and could barely speak english. I told him my problem and he said sorry it's out of warranty and there is nothing he could do. So i said the hard drive inside the unit has a 3 year warranty. he said well you bought the external hard drive so you only get a 1 year warranty. I was going no where with him so I asked to speak to a manager.
Mind you it's bad enough I lost all my info, but now I couldn't get a replacement. so the manager comes on

I bought two of these. It would seem that this would be an easy product to get set up, and it should be. Except that my computer initially would not recognize the drive when plugged into the USB port, and when I later tried to reformat it with NTFS instead of FAT so I could put 4 gig + video files on it, I had a lot of trouble.
In the end, I concluded that the connectors that came with the cables must have not been making good connections initially (perhaps they had some shipping sealant) because the more I used them, the more reliably they worked.
So if you buy these and have trouble as I did, try connecting and unconnecting the cables several times and see if that helps.

This is my secound external hard drive from Western Digital and I would never buy another type of external hard drive from any other company! This is great for the price and way beyond what I was expecting.

As usual, this portable hard drive have the great quality of Western Digital, it is fast, very easy to use, just have to have an available usb port, you will be satisfied with the transfer speed, i recomend his product 100%.

I picked up this product to make a video/film. It has worked well so far. It is also a good way to back up your machine if you have information that you can't afford to lose.

The unit appeared to be working fine for about a month before failing. Upon calling the support center we were informed that we would have to use a third party to recover the data that we could no longer access from the device. This would be at our expense!

Design & Portability
I had 2 external HD's, which were 250GB and 150GB. It was in two different enclosures, so where ever I went, it was a real hassle carrying two HD's. MyBook is pretty compact with 1TB platter inside, helps slimming the width. Its piano black enclosure is really slick in HD design. I would give this HD the best design in its category. Very simplistic, no buttons, small slit of blue LED in front.
Out of the box
Everything was packed, there were no mounting the HD inside the enclosure needed, unlike my older HD's. I just had to plug and play, it was that easy!
Performance
I have used this for over a month and its performance is average. The specs is on the HD is pretty fast with 7200 rpm and 16MB buffer speed. I have always preferred firewire ports for external HD, because they pack more power which helps transfer data much faster than the USB 2.0's
I have a XP PC and I cant boot my pc if the HD is connected. I always have wait few seconds before the login screen shows

I bought one of these a month ago at Costco for about $200 after a coupon. I bought it on the spot with little to no research trusting that if I didn't like it, I could return it. So far that hasn't been necessary since the drive has met and exceeded my expectations after a few gremlins plagued the initial installation.
This is the 3rd WD HDD I've purchased. Historically, I've had problems with faulty WD products, particularly the 160GB portal HDD which I had to return twice because of bad sectors. I did not feel confident that this product would be any less troublesome and it seemed I was correct during installation. It refused to recognize the Desktop it was attached to, restarting everything always turned up different results. Sometimes I could get the devices to see each other only for them to lose the connection a few minutes later, other times I had no luck whatsoever. Finally, after approximately 20 attempts, the HD started working. I was about to return the device right

"I bought the 1tb drive to start backup my computer. It runs Win XP home edition. I had a little difficulties with it, but not too bad beyond that, the drive has a lot of room and finally not too hard to setup. My complain is that the hard drive comes with 32 FAT format, and changing to NTFS you lose preloaded software, and valuable time(over 4 hours formating the drive).
When I first used it I noticed it was not as quite as other said, but I was told some noise is okay. I am a little worried about the drive failing so I am a little cautious about committing to it for baking up now.
I thought it would be a little faster too, but I guess that's not a big deal."

It is very hard to argue with the amount of storage that one of these drives offer. If you have been in the industry for awhile, you can remember when a terabyte of data meant an entire data center of storage!
These drives are quite and they format to NTFS quickly as long as you remember to specify quick format!! I have been pleased enough with the drive that I now own 6 of them. My laptop now has 6 terabyte of storage to work with! Since I do a lot of music and video work, that is important to me. Considering the fact that these drives now run about $229 when on sale, why would you not buy one?
Keep in mind that if you connect multiple drives, you will want to use different controlled ports on your computer; not just a USB hub (the reason is each dedicated port of a USB 2.0 can only work at a total of 400 MB/S. That means if you have multiple drives on the same controlled port that they are sharing that speed (this will really show up if you are moving data from one drive to another

I have had this hard drive for about a month now and have had no real problems with it. It is very quiet and has not had any hiccups. The only thing I have noticed may be a problem with Windows Vista. When the computer goes to sleep (hibernate and off works fine) the hard drive becomes unrecognizable when booting back up. However, all you have to do is unplug the USB port and then plug it back in and it works like a charm. Also, the drive will park itself after a while and when accessing it again it takes a few seconds for it to start running again. Other than that it works like it is supposed to. Running movies off of it works without stuttering. It also looks great. I would definitely recommend this product!

The drive runs very quiet. It powers itself off at times of inactivity. The transfer speed is decent, can't ask for much more from a backup drive. The price is reasonable. It also comes with simple backup software right on the HD.
The only minor issues I have are 1) the included mini-usb cable is about 3 feet long, and 2) when your PC is not shut off, the drive still has its light on even though it's sleeping. This light is very bright in a small room at night. Other than that, it's very easy to use: just plug-n-play.

1TB of storage... nuff said.
Bought this as a companion for my Fujitsu U1010. I use it to keep my video files, mp3s and documents. No switches, small power adapter, quiet and looks like a hardcover book. The USB 2.0 is pretty slow but I imagine if it were equipped with eSATA or firewire port it wont be as useful.
The best part? I only paid $257 for it. If you're not worried about the warranty, just take the drive out of the external case and plug it in your computer. It still cost less to buy than any 1TB internal HDD by seagate or hitachi.

Being USB it's not going to be blazingly fast, but it is pretty fast for USB. MYbook Drives are great because they power themselves on and off, are silent, and don't heat up much.

My expectations were beyond met when I plugged this in. It amazes me that a 1tb external HD can be so quiet. I had returned a 1tb older version of Western digital's external HD because it sounded like a jet engine. WD clearly fixed that problem.
The design is sleek and stylish, it is perfectly silent, and it transfers quickly with a 2.0 USB port. I would highly recommend this product.
