It's even worse for portrait pics. It leaves you with a loss of about 2/3rds of the screen to black lines. The optimal selection forces your pics to display with a loss of the same dimensions, only the loss is now cutting off your pics. It would have been great if the manufacturer could have looked at the size of pics from most cameras and made the monitor the same dimensions.
You cannot tell the silly minded thing to remember which pics you would like to display as a original or optimal, it does the same display to all the pics. The ZOOM option is nice but it only works when the slide show is turned off and you are on one pic, it then zooms in about 40% on the first zoom, 50% on the second and 60% on the third, no sliding zoom. There is no option to have it remember which pic to show as zoomed during a slide show.
There is no option to organize your slide show, you must determine that before you copy over the files to the memory, drive. If you want to listen to music while viewing a show, the music must be loaded on the same memory device as the show, limiting the number of pics by the size of your mp3 files.
The power cord is only about three feet long so you have to put it close to an outlet or use an extension cord. The options for time display duration are limited to 5, 10, 60 seconds or in hours.
There are several options which I have yet to figure out, they seem to be not functioning, like a timer for turning on and off the unit, it just doesn't do anything.
Overall, the pic quality is ok, the speakers are cheap and tinny with lots of distortion, the leg to support it in the back is cheap and lets it fall backwards as the adjustment is cheap. And last but not least, there was a small tag on the front of a glass cover inside the frame itself which covered the display, the tag read "GLASS COVER-- REMOVE BEFORE USE". I had no idea of what it meant, the tag or the glass. No instructions in the manual or online. I can only assume they mean the tag.

at the moment. Instead this is noted as a future addition. I suspect that they are aware of their inferior design, but not providing a firmware or software driver update is unacceptable.

All-in-all this is a poorly designed LCD picture frame (speaking as an Electronics Engineer). The flaky design alone doesn't compensate for the break in cost. As a consumer, I would highly recommend NOT purchasing this product. But that is just my opinion based on 4 separate purchases.
