Pros: music sounds great from Pandora, iPad and imac
Cons: expensive to purchase and set up
Purchased as a Xmas gift to myself, mainly, so I could listen to Pandora and music stored on my iMAC over my old sound system. Here is how I hooked it up to an old stereo and an old HD TV:
Only 2 HDMI ports on my old TV so I purchased a 4 port HDMI switch box with with wireless remote from Walmart for $34, plus a 3ft and 6ft HDMI cable. The cable TV HDMI cable and the Apple TV (new) 3ft HDMI cable go to the switch box then the (new) 6ft HDMI cable goes to one HDMI TV port. The other TV port receives the DVD HDMI cable, as the DVD playback signal kept dropping to a black screen for a few seconds when used with the switch box. Don't know why, but it works fine with this set up.
I did not want to replace a perfectly functioning, and older, high quality receiver and Bose sound system, so I purchased a "Coaxial Optical" to "R/L Audio Converter" thru Amazon for $25. (Apple TV comes with an optical cable.) That allows me to use two RCA cables from the converter to the "AUX in" on my receiver.
