I have just moved to a new city and this unit has been invaluable. Having it speak the names of the streets is a very worthwhile plus. The maps seem to be up to date in urban areas although there are some gaps in eastern Canada. Even in these cases it "does its best" which is pretty good. I found the "find lodging" function useful while travelling but using the unit to play music through the car stereo can present a problem since it is often difficult to find sustained "blank space" on the FM dial especially while travelling any distance as the nuvi is "stepped on" by local stations.

Here's the jist of my Garmin experiance:
I purchased both the Garmin 760 and the 680, and this review applies to each.
The FM transmitter is not clear (on any channel). I live in a suburb of the Twin Cities for reference). Maybe out in the country this would have worked better). So in populated areas it is unusable as a MP3 player, and unless you want to listen to intermittent static between directions, you'll just use the internal speaker. The blue-tooth also works, but not great, so unless you want to sound like you're in a box, you'll stop using that. The traffic mode did NOT redirect me around backed up freeway.
Buy a SIMPLIFIED GPS unit (don't even get wide-screen, because you won't need it, although it sounds nice) next one I buy will be small and just get me from A to B, with no bells and whistles.

I purchased the Nuvi 760,after returning the 660 for its poor maps.The 760 came with 2008 maps,and Garmin would not let me download free 2009 maps.It seems the unit I bought had been activated 4 months earlier.I don't know if it is Garmin or Amazon sellig returned units as new,but no more Garmin products for me! I would not bet my life on the directions the 760 gave either.The nearest police were 5 towns away,same with hospitals.We have 2 police stations in this town,both over 25 years in the same location.Our hospital is 5 times the size of the nearest one the 760 gives! My 3 year old in-dash gps is twice as accurate!

My wife and I purchased this system from Amazon, and we are very pleased with it. The graphics are great, as is the functionality of the unit. I am very happy with the routing/directions that we seem to be consistently receiving from it, as this was a concern from other reviews I stumbled across. The traffic avoidance feature seems to work quite well, as this unit came with the traffic receiver and free 90 day trial. The only thing that does seem to be consistent with some of the reviews that I have read is that the FM transmitter does seem to be a bit weak.
There are times when it will come in clear as a bell through my stereo, but other times it struggles to find a station that works well. This has not been that big of a deal with me, as I am so very pleased with all other functions of the unit. If it were stolen, I would order one from Amazon again without a second thought.

The unit has flaws when it comes to battery life, I have lower the screen lighting to 50%, yet battery still does not hold up as to specification given; 5 hours luckily if you get an hour or so. Calculating re-routing I give it a fifty fifty, sometimes performs well. Using the unit as to pedestrian setting, lousy I just spend 4 days in Washington DC and I was lost, the unit did not give the correct directions and when you are walking it just provided me a walking exercise which is not what I would recommend to anyone. However, allot of bells and whittles but no battery life's makes them obsolete. In conclusion it still the best unit compare to what is the market today. Price is high, but if you shop you can purchase about $350.00.

This is a gps navigation unit with some extras like fm transmitter, fm traffic information, Bluetooth and mp3 player.
based on the $400 price range you can not find a better GPS out there that offers that much.
If you don't care about the extras look in to buying the nuvi 260w.
PROS.
* The nuvi 760 is very well build and very easy to use even for someone that never used a GPS before.

After using the nuvi 760 for about a month, it's clear that this is best nuvi yet. It has a nice bright screen, good Bluetooth integration, and really, really handy "Where Am I?" feature with pointers to nearby gas, hospitals, and police. I think that all of this combined with Garmin's spot-on routing makes the nuvi 760 an excellent choice for anybody in the market for a portable GPS unit.

We bought this nuvi the day before our two week, travel-by-car vacation in several states that we've never been to before. It worked great. A couple of times, in large cities (DC, NYC) it got a little lost in the directions and had us trying to turn left where we couldn't, but the rest of the time it worked great. We used it to find restaurants, hotels, gas - always worked great. The only complaint with it is that if you search for a restaurant by name ("spell" feature) and it isn't in the database, it never comes back to tell you it can't find it - it just keeps looking! But, overall, a very capable and useful GPS. I think we used every feature, including the "where am I" feature so we could find our car in parking lots.

This is my first GPS, and I studied all the reviews and decided on this one, with all the bells and whistles. I've only used it for two weeks, but here are my impressions so far:
LIKES: Screen size (can't imagine using anything smaller) and portability; easy to see in daylight; fast lock on satellite and quick recalculation if I don't follow its instructions; easy bluetooth coupling with my Motorola RazR phone (but I haven't called anyone, so have yet to experience the "tunnel effect" that other reviewers have mentioned); easy to mount, unmount and position from the "beanbag" mount; the maps appear to be very detailed, even naming dirt roads! I enjoy using the male British voice for the spoken directions -- the American woman's pronunciation is a bit unclear.
DISLIKES: (1) Inaccurate directions. This has been mentioned by other reviewers, and really needs to be addressed by Garmin or its mapmaker. I used it to drive from home to work (about 40 miles), and it routed me through a small

I used the Nuvi 760 to help guide me around the USA on a recent visit.
It was an excellent and reliable travelling companion.
The unit was not 100% accurate. However, it was usually reliable and gave good guidance.
I have used other brands of GPS units, as well as earlier model Garmin units (including Nuvi 660).
At time of writing, I recommend this unit as being a generally reliable travelling aid, with better functionality than many other brands as well as earlier Garmin models.
The internal aerial is a useful advance on earlier Garmin units.
I recommend that purchasers consider the following accessories:
1. The Arkon GN 047 vent mount- this is very useful in places where it is not legal to use the windshield suction cup mount (such as California).
2. The Garmin carrying case- this is useful for protecting the Garmin when you use it while walking around.

9. You can add user created POI's to the unit. Search around on the web for POI libraries; they are there and it is not that difficult to add them to your unit.

I am an experienced GPS user. I have also been a long time Garmin
user.
This product is clearly focused on people who are new to GPS use and ones
who have not experienced one of Garmins earlier superior products. It is
not powerful but very simple to use.
There are some good things. The larger screen is nice and my Nuvi gets a
satellite lock quickly. I also like the portability and small size which
makes it easy to carry on trips.
I have had very good experience with the Garmin map accuracy in
general. This device is no exception.
Unfortunately, for me the rest is downhill. All of the "bell and whistles"
that Garmin has added are close to worthless. If you will read the other
reviews closely you will find agreement that the FM function is poor.
As far as I am concerned it is DOA. I don't see why you would use such a
poor quality device to listen to anything. The bluetooth hands free idea
might have some merit if the speaker and microphone worked well
but they do not.

This product was easy to use. Most controls and settings were intuitive but it should have come with a preprinted manual. You could download and print the manual but for the cost it should have been included. It worked as stated most of the time. It was able to find not only the address you were looking for but could also locate many nearby restaurants, gas stations, churches, lodgings and attractions quickly. Rarely, it had the wrong map at the street level. Its biggest fault was that it would not let you change the route that it had picked. It generally picked the best route, even better than you could do by looking at a map, but you could not alter this route without changing your destination. Overall a good product which I would purchase again.

I have used many different GPS devices and this is far beyond the best! I use the device daily in my car as a handsfree phone and mp3 player and with my job i travel constantly and the traffic service has saved me tons of time. The millions of poi really does pick up all of the local businesses, i use it on my travels as i usually pick up bagels etc for my clients and it has always led me to the local shops.
The FM transmitter could be a little better but if you find a station that is clear then it works great. I prefer to use the audio output jack and it connects directly to my stereo that way i can listen to music talk on the phone and navigate using the cars speakers, ALL in ALL I Love My Garmin!

This is my first GPS, which I purchased after going through lot of research. Since this is my first GPS, so cannot compare with other brands or models. Overall I find it very nice. Except for the FM transmission, I did not find any major concerns with the product.
Pros:
A very nice and simple user interface.
Can be charged via USB interface.
Includes traffic receiver, but requires service to be purchased.
Good routing engine.
Announces if destination will be on right or left side of street.
Point of interest database is pretty good.
Has other nice features like language(dictionary/thesaurus), translation(in different languages), but requires additional software to be purchased.
Cons:
The FM transmitter is quite underpowered.
Expensive.

This GPS 760 is easy to read and speaks the street names. It is intuitive to use and does not even require reading the manual. It knows when it is dark or light outside, speaks many languages and is compatible with Bluetooth. The larger screen makes it a better choice than my smaller 200 model. Great item.

I love this GPS. I have no sense of direction and I get lost all the time but with this GPS I can get everywhere without any problems. I love how it recaculates if I have to make a pit stop. It's very easy to use. The negative things about this unit are the MP3 player and the Bluetooth capabilities. I was pretty dissapointed in those features. The MP3 player doesn't send out a strong enough signal to the stereo so mainly you get static. The hands free doesn't have a good enough mic. so you have to yell for the person on the other end can hear you. They should probably give you a corded mic. so you can hang it from the visor. Other than that this thing has all the bells and whistles that I need. Don't buy this if you're wanting the MP3 or the Bluetooth capabilities, you'll end up returning it. Buy it if you're looking for a reliable, easy to use GPS with fast satilite aquisition.

Every so often, something is invented which is truly useful and once used, it's hard to imagine life without it. I find this GPS is in that category. The Garmin Nuvi 760 is the first and only GPS I've ever owned. We recently returned from a 3 week road trip over many thousands of miles, and thanks to the Nuvi, we never took one wrong turn. While driving through cities and changing roads, the Nuvi even says in advance to stay right or stay left, which is very useful in unfamiliar territory. The Nuvi knew exactly where we were, even in gas stations, hotel or restaurant parking lots. The traffic receiver worked automatically when we entered an metropolitan area where it was available. The points of interest are amazing and I was able to find all kinds of places we needed. The only issue I had was a local one. For the fun of it, on the way home from our trip, I put in a via point of our local post office, so we could stop and pick up our accumulated mail before we got home. The Nuvi

The Nuvi 760 is a great Nav system.
My wife has the Honda version built into her Pilot. The Nuvi is better in alsmost all respects. The one thing the Honda version has is it lets you look up businesses by name or by phone number. The Nuvi lets you look them up by name or how close it is to your current location. I find I miss the ability to just punch in a phone number.
The included traffic service has saved me a bit of time by pointing out and helping me avoid accidents before I got tangled up in the traffic caused by them. It even directs me around construction on the expressways.
My complaints are (other than the lookup by phone number missing):
1) It doesn't always connect with the traffic service right away. Some days it does, some days it doesn't. I can't figure out the pattern.
2) I wish the traffic service picked up a few more main roadways near me.
3) It sometimes provides "weird" directions. Near me, where I know the roads well, it's always directing me onto the main

I believe the personal GPS units have evolved into a great product with many good choices. My choice on which unit was not easy. Magellan, TomTom and Garmin all have their strengths and weaknesses but I feel Garmin is the best overall choice.
I selected the Nuvi 760 and love it. The satellite aquisition is very fast. The routing calculations are very good with many easy to use options.
The only items I would like to see improved are the internal speaker and FM transmitter. They both work ok, but not great. Sound quality on the built in speaker is just not that good in noisy environments. The FM transmitter was my first try to overcome this but I found myself constantly having to change channels. I may look into an external speaker for the headphone port.

I have been using the Magellan 4050 GPS for about a year, and decided to "upgrade" to a full featured Garmin unit. In some ways the upgrade was significant-first COST! Honestly, there are some features on the Garmin that the Magellan didn't have, and I love it for them but is not a clearly superior GPS. One is the built in MP3 player that allows the unit to be your music player. When you do this the Nuvi will automatically mute the music for routing instruction or bluetooth calls just like a factory installed Nav system. Of course, this is not without fault. The built in FM transmitter is too weak to be used so the only other option is to use the headphone jack to route to your stereo system. This means plugging a headphone jack into the unit every time you use it (the cradle has a mic jack for the phone, and a power jack but no duplicate line out). The other problem is that there is no bluetooth phone volume, and when running through your car speakers the phone is insanely loud
