I bought 4 of these for a RAID5 setup in September. So far I've had two of them fail. One was a hard failure in which the controller stopped working completely, and the other is showing a lots of seek errors in the SMART data and tells me its going to fail soon. They both started clicking the heads (a symptom of a reset because of an error) just a few days after I got them.

Seagate replaced the total failure within a couple of days after I reported it, and now I have to ship them back the failed drive. I bought a new unit I'm expecting tomorrow as a spare replacement, and I will be reporting and shipping back the drive with all the seek errors soon.

The drives have otherwise been great, but 50% isn't such a good reliability statistic, and that's my primary measure for a drive.

On the other hand, I did buy two other drives from the same family, two ST3500320AS drives. They have been working away flawlessly in my workstation in a RAID1 setup since I got them.

Just a little over 3 weeks old and it died. Seagate's poor overseas tech support, of no help, they offer to send a `refurbished' drive (a used one) to replace what I purchased NEW. Called Seagate Corporate, no help, selecting numbers to more automated script recorded voices. No option to get to a real person or a operator. Good bye Seagate, poor service, poor drive. Save you money. Run from this company.

I purchased two of these for use in a Drobo. One went bad in a week and now, a month later, I am still awaiting replacement from the vendor. I choose Seagate after a recent round of Western Digital failures, and the fact that Seagate has a major R&D center in my hometown. Sort of a support the "local" guy mentality. I hope I did not make a bad decision.

I don't usually write reviews, but this is a frustrating experience that I don't want anyone else to have to live with.

I bought this item on August 25, 2008 and the installation was very smooth. I easily replaced my one 250 GB Western Digital that came with my desktop, and I was very excited about all the extra space that was going to be available in my new 1 TB Seagate.

I came home today (Oct 21, 2008) to see my computer boot up as "Boot disk failure," which basically means that my computer thinks I have no hard drive at all.

Now this message popped up once or twice a couple weeks before, but for those times, everyone worked fine again after a simple restart. (I should have known better and backed up my files, but I made the mistake of trusting this product for a bit bit longer)

I tried restarting countless times, but there was no hope in it this time. Now I was geek enough to open my desktop to try whatever I can to fix the problem, so I experimented using a different part

This is a OEM drive so that it all you get no screws or SATA cable so have them on hand. Also Register your drive Before you install you need the serial # off the drive to do so for your 5 year warranty. Good Value for the price per GB. Great Drive for back-ups

Although not purchased from Amazon, this drive was the perfect solution to consolidate my music and video libraries. Performance has been about the same compared with a smaller 320GB Maxtor HDD which is being replaced. The high marks were for the price. I will be looking at purchasing a few more of these drives and putting them into an external RAID 5 enclosure.

It's the classic price vs performance debate. How much do you value your data and at what cost should you protect it? Personally I think Seagate has an edge on the competition, it's prices are decent, whilst most importantly, the performance and build of the drives are stellar. It runs quiet, I was forced to strain to listen to hear it running. It actually ran all night backing up an entire archive and was only moderately warm. The 5 year warranty put's your mind at rest too should the unspeakable happen.

A warning:
I received an OEM drive, i.e. the part was pulled from the mfr's shipping container and reshipped. Amazon failed to properly prepare the drive for shipping. Because I stupidly assumed a SATA cable came with the drive I will have to get one before I can tell if it is working at all. If I am unfortunate enough that it works I am afraid I can't expect a full life expectancy because it has been slammed around enough to pop all the internal airpacs.

Specifically the drive came in a 9X12 inch Amazon box with a few (unpopped)airpacs then an internal 9X6 inch Amazon Box with an ironic "Ready to Ship!" sticker containing the drive and 2 popped airpacs. I don't think there was enough packaging to prevent rattling of the 9X6 box and inside the 9X6 box obviously experienced enough acceleration to pop all the airpacs placed with the drive.

I installed this drive as a replacement for my 200GB Barracuda main drive.

I used the Disc Wizard to clone the old drive. The cloning appeared to work fine, but later I found that my backup program crashed with a blue-screen-of-death - STOP: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0xe5acb398, 0xe5acb3b8, 0x0c040207).

Later research showed the fix was easy [...].

Since the fix I am very happy with the drive. It is about twice as fast as my previous drive and I have to run it with 1/2 speed jumper.
