I hadn't used this recorder consistently since I bought it over 6 months ago and being as how the semester was going to be difficult taking Calculus III and University Physics II, I decided to break out my very much unused $100 piece of equipment for the Fall semester. It's been a very solid recorder for recording my class lectures so far. I'll throw a few disclaimers out there though before I start the review for the recorder for my school lectures. My classes are about 30-40 people as I'm at a community college so there's not a huge auditorium to compete against or 200 other talking people. I also don't sit as close to the teacher as the first row. I'm usually in the 2nd or 3rd row back out of 4-5 rows. Those two things being said, the recording is amazing even if you don't real real close to the teacher. I do have to turn up the volume on my speakers when I download the recordings via USB, but that's about the only thing that I have to do to hear my lectures well when I'm reading over

I use it for interviews. I love it becasue it is so small and unobstructive. I have done an interview next to a blaring air conditioner, next to a tv, & near construction, and when i listened to the playback the intervewee's words were full and crystal clear.

I got this after much review of the various voice recorders I could find. This seemed to be the best and, from what I used it for so far, it has worked great. I picked it since I had 2GB memory (best I could find), 5 different folders, decent battery life, direct usb connect, records WMA, plays WMA and MP3 on its music mode, and ahs a nice backlight screen. Once you read how to use the different settings, it is pretty easy to navigate with nice menus and folders. I haven't full tested out range or such, but it got lot of settings which should let you record close or at long range or such. The only bad part I have found was the battery goes in the part the detaches for usb connection, which wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't hard to get back on. May be something you get better with in time or mine could be a little off normal fit, not sure. There are also lot of accessories for it, but they are for pretty much any voice recorder and amazon seems to have them cheaper then the Olympus shop.

MY USES: Recording speakers and lecturers; research (one-on-one interviews); telephone recording through Olympus phone recorder cable system (highly recommended) ** Olympus RULES the DVR market, IMHO. Clarity great; ability to set speeds/quality is wonderful; there is a learning curve to use it but it's manageable (do it AHEAD of your need, though - a tricky little DVR!) High quality feel in hand and discreet; others tend to forget it's there, which sometimes is important when interviewing. 1) Excellent recorder for all purposes, including recording crucial phone calls as needed; just be sure to carry batteries (sigh...) as you will lose recordings if battery dies in the process... 2) HORRIBLE battery life/set-up as you cannot shut this off - move a slider to "hold" and supposedly preserve battery - not in my experience. Why no "off" switch? No idea. 21 hrs battery life? Who's zooming who? 3) Does NOT charge battery, even if using rechargeable AAA NiMH, when attached to computer...WS-500/510

Very nice good sounding recorder, has mulitple high end features.
A delight to use, and a remarkable sound to it, its sensitivity
is additionally beyond imagination. Simply add a pair of preamplified stereo speakers to its jack sit back and listen to your recordings as if they had been recorded by a Professional recording studio.

I bought this recorder because the model which has 132 hours of recording worked extremely well giving me absolute confidence in this version which has 555 hours on slow play. It picks up a group conversation outdoors at night around a campfire with planes flying overhead. The audio is excellent and all (even the quietest speakers) can be heard clearly. I needed a digital recorder with more time for our 2 month trip to Europe where I will be recording relatives about family history. The size and weight are perfect for shirt or pants pocket. I would recommend any in this series without hesitation.

I use this recorder for two things: recording college lectures and music lessons. It does a superb job with either voice or music. I have a cheaper recorder that also does a 'good enough' job, but the recordings on this one are fantastic quality. Easy to use. Buy it if you need a small recording device.

The WS-331 Digital Voice Recorder is a "perfect fit" into the shirt pocket of a law enforcement professional to capture those spontaneous or excited utterances, which usually come only once at the scene. The overall size of the recorder makes it almost invisible in the uniform shirt pocket. With a little practice, the operator can locate and activate the "record" button, which is placed conveniently at the top of the control buttons on the side of the recorder, in a nonchalant manner as to not alert the subject. Battery life is excellent even on those below 20 degree nights no one wants to talk about. I highly recommend this recorder become part of every law enforcement professional's "tool kit."

i host a radio bicycling show, and travel to--and participate in--bicycle races year 'round, and need an audio recording device that will allow me to capture, with NPR quality, both conversations and ambient sounds to recreate the atmosphere of the event or the person which is the subject of the recording.
this little wonder does it all.
i'm relatively new to the radio business, but with my olympus ws-331m and acessories, i come across like a seasoned professional. with its 2GB flash drive of memory and storage, it is touted to have up to 550+ hours of mono capacity. with my stereo microphone, the "lowest" quality setting provides 72 hours of recording memory in a quality high-enough for our state-of-the-art station's studio. i can't say enough about this little thing. and it's the size of maybe three cigarettes.
AMAZING!
i also bought the telephone conversation recording microphone set-up, and with the stereo earplugs as monitors and non-olympus microphone, i have a recording studio

This recorder/player works well for me. I use it in four ways:
1. Record notes and memos to myself for later action.
2. Record meetings for later transcription into personal records or official minutes.
3. Record narrations of presentations while practicing. Those narrations are then played into Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred to be turned into typed text. I then clean up the text into a better script and paste it into the Notes area of each slide.
4. Play music when I am not working.

This product works well for me, provided I remember to switch between dictation mode and conference mode as required. A very good value for the money. My next steps will be to purchase a couple of the accessory microphones to see how much improvement they make. (That will be because "I want to" NOT because "I need to".

A great small digital recorder except for 2 serious problems, plus 4 other problems:

Problem 1, starting Recording is a complex failure prone process

It is difficult to start recording. First, you have to slide the Hold switch downward, wait for the operating system to initialize the system and do a system check, then watch for the standard display to appear. At least 50% of the time the Hold slide switch fails to operate, provides a momentary pulse, then the system has to shut down. So you repeat this process until the system check is completed. Now the unit is on, then on the right side you press a momentary switch firmly, since there's no feedback from the switch and observe the red light or the display to insure that the unit is recording. Then examine the recording meter display to see if there's any amplitude reading. If there's no noise in the room then tap the mic to observe any amplitude reading, if it's there then you're recording. Otherwise, press the record switch

I used it twice a week in a 3 1/2 hour class. It picked up the instructor perfectly. AAA battery lasted a long time, but use the lithium ones to get even better time. Voice mode will play music but won't scan through songs automatically. In music mode, it will play an album straight through. It will not play all MP3s, but there's a way around it. It's smaller than a candy bar. Easy drag and drop files. You don't have to use Windows Media Player. Non proprietary USB - plugs right into your port or you can use the cable. You don't have to carry a special cable with you. Yay!! All in all, great, except the display could have more contrast and be easier to read.

I work by phone with people from all over the world. I needed a more efficient and cost-effective way to record and electronically send those sessions to anyone, anywhere.

The WS-331M has been the perfect solution. The recording quality is excellent. It's easy to use -- even for anyone not familiar with or into the latest tech gadgets (like me). The instruction manual is thorough, clearly written, and easy to understand. Even if you can intuitively figure out how to use the WS-331M without reading the manual, it would still be worth your time to read it because you'll pick up many useful shortcuts and tips. Since many other reviewers have gone more into the particulars of files, folders, etc., I'll spare you the repetition and stop here.

The best part for me is how easy it is to electronically send a recording. All I need to do is plug the recorder into my PC, download the session file onto my destop, upload it to Senduit-dot-com, and then send that link to the client. No worries about

This recorder can record pretty much anything, and play it back to you! It even includes a memory stick that can download music and other things to your computer or to itself. It is also the perfect recorder for music class or for performances. Just don't copy anything that you're not supposed to! When I saw my teacher using it for recording our performances and heard it, I just had to get one. I think that it is amazing!

From a long time Olympus customer - I thought my last WS-320M Digital Recorder was great - and now this - some really great enhancements to what was already a great tool for school, work and play.

Nice little device - improvements include:
- larger screen and larger, easier to read fonts
- improved battery case - bottom entry - my WS320 lost the cover in two weeks use
- twice the storage - 2Gig ! > 555 hours of recording
- cleaner nav. Buttons - always seemed to fat-finger the 320
- all buttons now have a solid tactile feedback with a subtle click action
- play/stop/record buttons are not as recessed - making them easier to press
- added playback filter - eliminates most compression artifacts - impressive clean signal on LP
- adds cut-off record filter to drop room noises - esp. A/C motor noises
- six slow and fast play speed options - 320 only had two choices
- USB 2.0 is faster - 320 had USB 2.0 too, but for some reason slower than other USB 2.0 devices
- stiffer

I have used this product to record lectures and personal notes. It's great because the recording quality is amazing and the MP3 player is unbelievably clear. I am impressed with its size, lightweight and easy use. And best of all, I've had it for nearly 1 year with no problems at all.

Ease of use: First read user guide - then it's great.

I've owned a number of Olympus voice recorders going back to the days of tape. All have been noteworthy performers. The WS-331M represents the state-of-the-art in non-dedicated digital voice recorders. That is, it is neither a dedicated dictation unit intended to be used with foot switches and other transcription accessories, nor a professional audio recorder.

Instead, this unit is intended for casual audio recording use. (It also has music player features which I have no need for and don't use.)

The unit has a staggering 71 hour recording capacity in HQ (High Quality) mode. I tried it in a large auditorium to record a lecture with three participants and the results were far more than merely satisfactory. Each voice was clear and distinguishable.

I used it for personal recording down to a slight whisper and the quality at every sound level is more than acceptable.

When I deliberately introduced loud background noise (a television talking heads show and a music-playing radio),

The Olympus Digital Voice Recorder & Music Player is really a great tool to use in an interview format and or classroom, like what the description states. I purchased this item to use for our on-hold messaging for our phone system at work. The clarity is truly excellent and easy to use. I recorded our message with music playing in the background and couldn't figure out why it was "echoing". After reading the easy-to-understand instruction manual, (yes I should have done this in the first place), I found that there is a function to allow the music to run in the background without overpowering the voiceover - very cool. Another benefit is the fact that it is quite compact and very easy to use. What didn't I like? The record button is hard to manipulate, which meant I could hear myself starting and stopping the recording function. It also doesn't run on a power cord, which I wish it did to save on battery cost, but I believe it runs on two (2) AAA batteries so it wasn't terribly inconvenient.

This is the most amazing device! It has so many great features and the stereo sound is very helpful. I agree with the praise from most all the reviewers. There are two major flaws I want future buyers to know about before buying:

1. Low microphone sensitivity and low playback volume.
2. Loss of recording if the battery runs out.

I had previously used an RCA voice recorder with low sound quality but it did not have these two major flaws. I would have returned the Olympus unit but it's plusses are so great that I decided to keep it.

I called Olympus Tech Support and they were not helpful at all. They told me to send an email and I got no response.

If you listen to the device where the background is perfectly quiet, it's fantastic. The problem comes when you need to listen in a low to moderate noise envionment such as in a car or while walking, for example. I CONSTANTLY find myself trying to turn up the volume. It just is inadequate. I never had that problem with the RCA

This is the 3rd Olympus portable digital recorder I own, the others being the DS 2000 (mono) and the DS 2200 (stereo).
The good things about this WAS-331M:
- capability of stereo recording without the need of external mic (capable), unlike the DS 2200 which can record in stereo only with optional stereo mic.
- direct recording in wma format, instead of propriety format like the DS 2000.
- recording in high fidelity (44 - 48 kHz).
- large built-in memory (2 GB) instead of using external flash card.
- capability of using as a flash drive with built in USB.
- capability of using as a mp3 player (in stereo) with USB direct transfer.
- USB device is recognized instantaneously; no software needed.
- capability of secret conversation recording, putting in pocket/bag, although it will pick up any noise.
Now, the bad thing about it:
- the battery life is not predictable. This is the most inconvenient default of this, otherwise near perfect, jewel. Who knew how many recordings I missed due to the

I spent about 10 hours researching before I finally selected this product (purchased on 7/10/07 from newegg for $140 + $5 shipping). It was the best choice for what I wanted: good digital voice recorder, good mp3 player, and good flash drive.

After spending a few hours with it, I am very impressed. It's tiny, very well designed, and an overall great product. The major con is when you touch the recorder while it is recording, you will very likely get scuffing sounds from your hands.

I was looking for a recorder that could play mp3s and had a feature that allowed me to loop a segment of a track (some say this feature is good for learning a new language as it loops the segment over and over, I use it for music). This player has a ton of nice features and the recording comes out very clear. The only drawback is the volume of the recorder, it's not loud at all. You can max the volume and the speaker still seems lower than other less expensive recorders. Even with the supplied headphones (which is of good quality), not very loud. That's the only thing, it's beautiful in every other aspect. With 2GB plenty of room for your stereo recordings, mp3s and other misc. data. It gets 4 stars only because of the volume output.

I reluctantly replaced a Sony voice recorder that I have been using for two years because I felt a little guilty about getting an upgrade so soon. But I was disappointed with quality and lack of MP3 capabilities. My guilt is gone! I am a pastor and the recordings are the BEST I've ever heard. I can record my sermons and listen to sermons I download off the internet. THere are 28 sermons, my fav CDs, and plenty of room for more. If you speak professionally, this is the tool for you!!

I rarely write product reviews but I feel it would be unjust not to say something good about a product so well crafted. I have been simply amazed by the performance of this recorder. I have owned several and this one surpasses all my expectations. 2GB of memory means that I can record everything in HQ without need to conserve space. Noise reduction is incredible. As you may know, lively churches and high interaction lectures can be noisy recording environments. I set my 331M and relax. Record and Playback filters eliminate almost all background noise.

No USB cord is needed to transfer files. Music is easily transferred back and forth. And the music quality with the built-in equalizers, bass control and reverb for depth of sound, is unbelievable. I use Jabra eargel headphones for the ultimate marriage of comfort and sound. Ipod who?

Controls and menus are very logical and easy to use. Feel is sturdy and light. The external speaker is great considering its size. When was the

Let me start by saying that I was originally overwhelmed by the number of digital voice recorders and the different features. As I began to study the market I soon realized that selecting the right recorder would not be easy. I eventually developed a list of the top features that I wanted in a recorder.

The most important feature was that the recorder must be compatible with Dragon Naturally Speaking. Fortunately, many of the Olympus recorders are not only compatible but excel in that area. The WS-331 has not yet been certified by Nuance (the maker of Dragon), but the lower models have been. Recognizing that the 331 is both a new model and a much improved version I knew that success of the lower models would be a good indicator. As an example, the WS-320 as well as the 300 offer excellent service for voice recognition.

Building on compatibility I also knew that I would need a recorder that was easy to use. While other recorders provide feature rich controls the attraction to the
