If you own a multi-system television (or a PAL television), you should be aware that all current USA Philips DVD players (including the 5982 and any models made thereafter) have the "TV Type" selections disabled in the firmware. The ONLY choice of output system (for U.S. machines) is NTSC, which is fine for most people, but if you have a multi-system TV, this means your PAL discs are going to undergo an unnecessary standards conversion (to NTSC).
All other worldwide versions of Philips machines still have NTSC, PAL and MULTI as choices in the "TV Type" menu. Why was it removed for the USA? My guess was to end calls to customer service for people complaining about black-and-white pictures (MULTI used to be the default choice back when US machines included all three types).
The 5960 is the last US model of this type/price point (including a USB port) to come with changeable TV type options, FYI.
I HAVE DISCOVERED A WORK-AROUND, however. You can change the player to multi-system by the

It plays everything: regular DVDs, downloaded movies from USB memory stick, and now, that I set it region-free, even the European DVDs. We can watch everything on a big screen, from a comfortable couch. I am very happy to have such a convenient little gadget for such a reasonable price!
For the info, the region free hack I found on the internet. It is simple: open the tray, press SETUP, choose PREFERENCE, press 1 3 8 9 3 1, select region 0. That's all.

My experience with Phillips has been horrible. I bough this player as a gift for my brother so it took me a while to give it to him and the 30 days return expired. The DVD player would not recognize discs so I called Phillips. They offered me a great solution, ship the defective unit to them (at my cost) and pay them $50.00 to send me a refurbished unit! Are you serious?
I don't know about you but that sounds like a horrible deal.
I called customer care etc to no help so I am boycotting Phillips. From now on I will NOT buy anything with their name on it. Funny thing is that my wife bought me a Norelco shaver which is made by them and it is actually pretty good. But still I am not buying anything from them anymore. Good luck though!
