This headset is a good performer... but if you realy want to hear what it is capable of buy a small amp like those made by Microshar [...] and WOW suddenly you will hear things in recordings you never knew existed. The headset is a touch on the big side... I'm not a pin head,7 1/8" hat size, and I can't get a good snug fit because it does not adjust any smaller. But the sound at this price point is worth it. These headphones are wonderful. They are the best pair of headphones I have ever owned. I consider myself an audiophile. I have no electronic background but have purchased many high-end pieces of audio equipment over the past 30 years. I currently own several headphones including the AH-D2000 (I purchased these for my daughter) and the Ultimate Ears triple.fi10 earbuds to use when I travel. I am sure I would love the AH-D9000 but I felt the $600 difference was probably not justifiable. I was able to purchase these for $399. There is a small, but noticeable, sound quality difference between the 2000 and 5000 headphones that I felt the less than $200 difference between them was worth it. Bass is deeper without distortion. Treble notes are crisper. Midrange is fuller. Although I can listen to classical music, my preference is classic rock. Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall sound fantastic. Led Zeppelin is amazing. For those that have commented that these headphones

No need for me to write another long users opinion on these headphones. Just looking at the reviews of others before I purchased the HD-D5000's had me sold. You might also want to check out [...] this is a great place to get a wealth of knowledge on high end headphones and gear. I was shocked to find them here at Amazon and sold by Amazon to boot, at almost $200-300 cheaper than other on line retailers. After owning Sennheiser HD-595's for the past two years it was time to step it up a notch. And wow I couldn't be more pleased. There is absolutely no comparison what so ever in the two. I saw one review describing the base, well to me it sounds like a powered subwoofer built inside and the midrange and highs are absolutely perfect for my taste. I have never experienced headphones with such realistic sounds in my life; it is truly like you're in the studio or in concert hall while it is being recorded. I listen to all types of music from rap to classical and everything in between, and it

The sound from these Denon AH-D5000 headphones is extraordinary (even at their list of $900 instead of the current clearance price of $350 - you may not get a warranty at that price). I didn't like them much at first until I let them break in for about 200 hours. After break in, the recessed midrange came forward and the bass tightened up. The bass the Denon headphones put out is the equivalent of what you might get out of speakers with 12" woofers. The bass is not overpowering and is accurate. However, you had better be a bass lover. When listening to Diana Krall, it was as if I was right beside Ray Brown playing the acoustic bass with my head just a few feet from the soundhole. The highs are Angelic. They are detailed, revealing, and open, yet delicate at the same time. They produce some of the best piano and steel string guitar music I have heard. The midrange is another Denon forte. However, it is slightly recessed due to the relatively powerful bass. Yet, the mids are

These are absolutely wonderful headphones and my favorite of all the ones I've tried by far. They offer you a sound that is even better than open-air type headphones (great sound stage and separation etc), yet without any of the negatives of an open-air design like sound leakage and lack of isolation. Until now, such a headphone didn't exist because many closed ear headphones don't have such a good sound stage as these Denons. The bass on these headphones is amazingly great yet they don't sound muddy at all and the midrange and highs are all very pleasant. Listening to these headphones really feels like candy for the ears. These are also the most comfortable headphones ever. I find myself wearing them even when I'm not listening to something sometimes; they are that comfy! Further, these headphones look wonderful with the nice mahogany wood outer ear cups that match the sliver and black parts perfectly. Very classic yet modern design! They sound great plugged directly into my iPhone

We have come to the point where it is no longer necessary to have 5 pairs of headphones for different types of music. With the d5000 we are able to enjoy any music which we appreciate and we appreciate it more now with headphones in the sound quality realm as with the d5000.We no longer need dark headphones for silent classical type music or bright headphones for electronic loud type of music. We are completely covered with the use of the d5000 which are as comfortable playing chamber music as Led Zeppelin to any complicated type sonic noise we call music. The d5000 are comfortable with whatever music travels through them. I have had a few pairs of these and it appears as time continues the people at Denon are responding to early feedback by stuffing the ear bands with more stuffing or making the screws fit so the headphones don't fall apart. The one thing which is consistent however is the pleasing sound of the d5000 almost immediately out of the box. They do quite quickly improve over

I am not a professional audio engineer. However, for 40 years I have been listening to music through a pair of stacked original Quad ESLs. I also own Stax Lambda Pro headphones, Grado RS 1, Sennheiser 650, etymotic 4S and Ultimate Ears triple fi 10 pro. I was recently listening to the Sennheiser and found television dialog difficult to understand. I read the review posted 12/25/08 by the audio engineer, and wish to confirm his observations.
Out of the box, just plugged into my MacBook Pro, listening to classical music, the clarity of these headphones is obvious and impressive. Voices sound natural, the detail is present but not overly etched. I will run them awhile to break them in.
My advice, if you care about clarity in musical reproduction, give these headphones a listen.

My perspective is a bit different:
Let me preface this review with a few points that should add to the review's credibility:
1. I am a classical sound engineer primarily, but work exclusively in acoustic genres where audio fidelity and sonic accuracy are paramount.
2. I work in both balance engineering and mastering, where I am often required to perfect the spectral balance (in both dynamic and frequency) of the final mixdown.
3. For over 10 years I have used Bowers and Wilkins loudspeakers in various environments (anechoic and otherwise) in addition to custom EQ'd headphones for my work. B&W is widely believed to manufacture the finest loudspeakers in the world.
4. I regularly attend live classical music concerts, often in ideal seating locations, resulting in a great familiarity of how live music sounds.
I researched a number of headphone options before settling on the Denon AH-D5000. I was curious about the Ultrasone models from Germany, but was wary of a technology that supposedly

I won't give an extensive review here as there are enough accurate reviews out there. What I will do is address three myths that are frequently brought up about these headphones. They may help a purchaser decide if they want to buy these or not.
1. The amp myth. While some people may throw a $400 amp between these headphones and their source, an amp is NOT required. After reading all the comments about how much these headphones required an amp I purchased headphones amps (portable and desktop) and well regarded DACs. I then tested different combinations with my motherboard's (almost 4 years old) built in sound card as the baseline. If you want to pay money for the very subtle (I'm not even sure I could hear them in a blind test) changes feel free. However, these headphones sound fantastic straight out of my computer, a Cowon D2 PMP, and a recent Sony PMP. I even tried them plugged into the headphone out of a 3 year Dell laptop and they were fantastic. All that extra equipment

These phones were as represented by the vendor (Antonline), received in 2 days - amazing.
The D5000s are great... if... they're burnt in at least 300+ hours... and you have an amp which has an output impedance of 25 ohms, or less (the input impedance of the D5000s - which is very low).
If not... they will sound muddy and boomy (which is great sound if you're a "hip-hopper"). If you have the right amp and CDP/DAC - they will sound great, after they're burnt in - though they still will have a bit "too much, too boomy" bass.
To tighten the bass up properly - you will need the "Markl Mods" to reduce the excessive harmonics, and standing waves of the ear cups (adding DynaMat to the ear cups, and driver frame, and some Fiberloft). You can find the instructions for these mods on "Headfi," under the "How to make the World's Best Dynamic Headphones" thread. UPDATE: Actually... with the right set up (e.g. Marantz SA-8001 SACD/CDP and the Musical Fidelity X-CANv8 head amp), you really won't

The Denon AH-5000 headphones impress you right out of the package, but with so many headphone choices avaiable, come might find it hard to justify spending over $400 for a pair. Can it really be that good?
= The dark mahogany ear cups are tight-grained and smooth, and somehow also surprisingly light. The pads are covered in light, faux leather that can get somewhat sticky in warm weather. Ear pressure is quite firm, and uncomfortable only if they aren't seated on your head just right. Unlike open headphones, these offer effective isolation, and have drivers designed to theoretically angle the sound more realistically to your ears,
= The D5000 sound signature favors the bass - not the sexy bass sound of, say, the Sennheiser HD650, but a more luxurious, enveloping sound. They also have a subtle and appealing treble. As a result, these phones are the sonic equivalent of sitting back in a couch. At the same time, the bass is sometimes overwhelming for anyone more accustomed to the lean

Bought these for watching movies with Dolby Headphone Processing on Blu-Ray HD Suround Sound. Better than separate speakers, amazing detail and depth. Bass reproduction undescribable, can't believe Phones can create such tight and low bass reproduction. Dialog is scrisp and clean. The Magnesium composite they use makes them super light, the leather cushions are soft and the pressure is adequate, but not to tight for long wear, this is a must since I watch movies for 2hr or more at a time. The cushions also have extra thickness near the back behind your ear so they get even pressure and stay level with your head. The Mahogany Cans really give the reproduction of tones such richness, it's like strapping some B&W towers to your ears. Every sound and detail is brilliant and clean. I also use these to listen to DVD-Audio. Music in Hi quality, it is like being at the concert, only minus the crowd and interference. Aspecially when using Dolby Headphone Surround DH3 for music. You can close your

I ordered these because I was getting tired of wearing my Shure in-ear buds. I ordered them to listen to primarily classical music in an office environment. I already have a set of Grado RS-1s but since those have an open design, they tend to leak more noise ... in AND out.
For the cost of the headphones, the packaging is a little weak. A protective bag for these puppies would be nice. Putting them on -- I would say they are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn -- light years above the Grados. They are designed for a big head, I think because they feel a little loose on my head at the smallest setting (there are 7 variable settings on each side) but since I'm not going to be working out with these on, they are fine and probably add to the comfort level.
The first thing I played was the Bruch Violin Concerto. It sounds phenomenal. I close my eyes and imagine myself listening in a concert hall. The clarity of the sound is amazing -- you can things on the recording

I recently heard these headphones. They are comfortable. They have leather covers and metal fittings. The leather is comfortable on the ears and the actual enclosures seal around the ears completely. I do not believe that any sound leaks outside. They are big enough to cover even the biggest ears. The covers are removable and replaceable. The actual drivers are covered with a grill to prevent any accidental damage to the cones. The metal fittings are very likely to prevent accidental breakage, but then also allow for some flexibility in fitting. They fit snugly, but not so tightly as to make them feel too close. The phones have mahogany end pieces that are quite attactive. The package does not come with a case.
The sound is wonderful. I listened to a number of different selections of music. I listened to some Cuban music emphasising rhythm. The bass was clear and precise with plenty of body. I listened to some CSNY from the Deja Vu album. All instruments sounded very clear
