Although I own a laptop, I wanted something smaller and more portable for downloading pictures from my digital camera card when I'm traveling. That was my #1 reason for wanting a portable media player.
I read a lot of reviews for the Digital Foci Picture Porter Elite and Epson P-5000 before deciding which one to buy. My assessment was that the Epson was actually somewhat better (at almost twice the price); but the Picture Porter was also a very good choice. My budget being what it is, I bought the 80Gb Picture Porter Elite from Amazon. With their free shipping, Amazon had the best price I could find on the Internet.
For my purposes, I stand by my decision to purchase the Picture Porter Elite. On the other hand, I am neutral as to whether on not I would recommend this item to a friend. That would really depend on how my friend intended to use it.
Below is a list of things I consider to be pros/cons of the Picture Porter Elite.

I purchased the Picture Porter Elite because I needed a replacement for my old iPod-camera connector setup to back up photos on travel. The company (Digital Foci) seems to have a broad following in the digital photography community based on its Photo Safe product, which does the same thing as the Picture Porter Elite but without an LCD screen. I thought that springing for the LCD screen would be a big plus so that I could view the photos instead of "trusting" that the unit backed up the photos from the camera's memory card.
The first thing I noticed after receiving the Picture Porter Elite was the size and weight of the unit itself. My wife commented also on this - "that's going in your carryon luggage, not mine". After turning it on and futzing around with it, my impression didn't improve very much. The LCD screen wasn't as high-res as other PVPs, and the menu system was rather clunky.
In the end, although next to the Wolverine units it had the best price/storage size ratio for storing

Great Hard drive for portable storage and data backup.
The video is weak. Not really good for evaluating photos but, okay for general viewing. Watching videos and listening to music is neat. Great when flying.
Overall a pretty good deal for the price.

This device is great. I purchased it as a portable hard drive to store digital pictures while traveling, and it has held up well beyond my original expectations. The device comes pre-loaded with everthing you need to view pictures or movies, and has practically every cable you need to attach to a PC, camera, or TV for copying, transfering, viewing etc.. I was worried at first that it would be incompatable with the new SD/HC cards I had recently started using, but not the case. The Digi Foci 120 read my new cards without any trouble and was able to transfer, copy or read direct from the card without any problem. I took this on a cruise with me and it was so nice and fun to be able to look at and share pictures from other people's cameras without having to look for a PC etc. to copy was amazing. Anyone looking for an easy way to store files from your camera, and without a PC copy files from any type of media card with a minimum of hassle, and with an added benefit of having a digital

The device works great for storage of image files. Took it on a 10 day trip, and download 2K photo's and small video files without a hitch. Battery lasted the whole trip without a recharge. I was disappointed in the image quality, and the ease of deleting and sorting - basic file management. My hope was I could delete the so/so pictures on the trip, but the image quality wasn't good enought to make a decision.

THis is the only way to travel and store your digital pics and vids. No more lugging around a laptop to download into. This fits into hotel safes since its a little bigger than a wallet. The video veiwing screen is clear and sharp. It was a steal and with 120GB it has tons of storage.

Just got this product and inserted an SD card to view the pictures taken with my NIKON D80 camera taken on RAW format. Surprise!!! The small LCD Screen on my camera has better resolution than the much bigger Screen on the Picture Porter.
If you want a product to store and better view your work while on the field, then this is NOT what you are looking for. Images look blurry at best, 0 detail and 0 sharpness...
LCD Resolution on this prod is 320x240, and the worst is that no information on resolution is available here for similar products.... SKIP!!!

The only problem I have so far with this machine is that the view box, though large enough, does not do justice to the photos. The view is very grainy. Also, the instruction manual is rudimentary at best. Not super informative, so the user is left to discover features and functions and buttons on his/her own. I bought this unit to replace carrying my laptop while travelling internationally. It is convenient to free up memory cards and have back up storage for your images. But it is pretty much useless for editing.

Cool technology! Brought it with on a scuba live aboard (boat) trip. It is good to get pictures off of your chip when you run the risk of a flood at any time. Product did all it is supposed to. Everyone else on the boat said they were going to get one too. Worth the $$.

This unit is fast, easy to use, supports zoom/nav with ajoystick control and supports RAW (no MKIII support a/o thisreview, but I don't own that)4.0 MB/Sec speed off CF card is a pleasure.Display is not as large as the Epson, but is very crisp andat 100% it is a very good check for sharpness. By price comparison to the Epson units, I'm very pleased.(Item was a gift)

There was a lot of thought in this product and it is easy to see that. I bought this to back up my Nikon RAW photos while in trips. It is quick for the amount of data I ask it to transfer. It is a great companion (built in radio) and the connectivity is great. The photos show up larger than life on Tvs (HD tested only so far) and look great. I also use this as my carry along digital photo album now. Could the product be better...honestly yes. There are some issues I have with the layout and capabilities of the unit BUT the important thing to me is it does what I bought it for and it does it very well. If you want to travel with your photos and back them up while your out then this is the perfect product for you.

I admit I've just started to use it now,but I am very much impressed by it. For years I've been looking for a way to turn my 8mm tapes into DVD's. Now I can record them unto this gadget,then I will put the movies unto DVD's. It's great that you can just take your memory cards and put it into this item,then it reads them fast and you can have them on this one as well.
The sound quality is great too.
I would strongly recommend it to anyone,over many other similar items.

I admit I've just started to use it now,but I am very much impressed by it. For years I've been looking for a way to turn my 8mm tapes into DVD's. It's great that you can just take your memory cards and put it into this item,then it reads them fast and you can have them on this one as well.

The best quality of this product is the 160GB size hard drive, double the 80GB Epson. The interface is very cluncky, (definitely not an apple product) but gets the job done. The screen was a couple of notches below our Canon SLR displays, but once again it gets the job done. The epson is superior in every way, price included, except the size capacity. And, on our recent photo assignment to Japan the 80GB Epson was just too small so we went with picture porter, and it got the job done. But when our next assignment takes us away for an extended period our hope is the Epson will have some increased capacity. If your going to be away from your computer for LESS than 80GB worth of images the Epson is still your best bet. But, if you need MORE than 80GB the Picture Porter is pretty... good.

I have been quite pleased with this unit. It is so easy to use and the quality is better than I had hoped for.The visual images are very good and the sound quality may be the best I have heard and I have tried many players over the years.

I purchased the 80GB Picture Porter Elite, and I love it. I bought it for a Belize vacation, and it was super easy to use. I didn't give it 5 stars because I can't figure out how to use the shortcut icons, however I haven't had a chance to contact customer service. We went with a group of friends on a scuba diving vacation, and I got a lot of comments on what a great device it was. We took a lot of digital photos, both topside and under the water, and at the end of the day, we would download all the photos and then have a slideshow on the picture porter - everyone would crowd around and ooh and aah. We did finally hook up the device to a TV and show a slideshow on the TV, which was cool.
I highly recommend this product.

I have just received this Digital Foci ppe 360. Have only tested it at home but am very happy with it function. I got it because it reads my raw camon 5D and 20D perfectly.It tested perfect as to loading into computer. The other unit I have would not show raw on the lcd screen. Its an A in my books.

I am using all of the features and find them all quite intuitive and just as advertised. When I initially received the PMP, the joystick was broken. I emailed the company, quickly received a response with return instructions. I sent it back, received 2 phone calls (actual live people!!) letting me know the status of the repairs, and received the unit back asap. It was a flawless example of great customer service. So I know the product is exactly what I expected and the company has great customer service...

We are taking an Alaskan vacation this summer and I wanted something to store photos from my digital camera. The Picture Porter seemed the best choice! It can take cards from my Nikon D70, plus the card from my Nikon Coolpix. In addition, I can videotape movies to watch on the plane on our way to Fairbanks. I hooked up the Picture Porter to my portable DVD player and using the supplied cables, I copied a 2+ hour movie right into Picture Porter. It compressed the file into an mpeg4 file of only 860mg! It has great clarity and sound. And once we arrive, I can simply delete the movie file so I have additional space for photos!
The Picture Porter is a bit bulky, but seems substantial enough not to crack like some smaller units (Ipods, etc) if I happen to drop it. The screen is large enough to view a movie on an airplane, and show photos to others.
I know there are other features I haven't even used it, like the FM radio and game feature (a bit like Tetris), but for what I needed,

I've always wanted a device that would hold my images after downloading from various memory cards, and would afford me the opportunity to also use it as an album.
The fact that I can also use it to play videos and movies and music when I'm traveling is an added bonus.
