After 2+ years of owning this camera, I've been thinking about buying the Nikon D90 or D300. But, I'm still not sure if the upgrade is worth the cost (FOR ME). I love this camera and it's an incredible value. For a non-pro enthusiast who understands their aperture, shutter speed and ISO, it's probably all you need. Do I wish it had more than 6 megapixels? No, not really. Six is plenty, especially since I'm not one to bother with much cropping. I'm not in any hurry to fill up my hard drive with huge file sizes. And, realistically I'm not printing anything more than 8x11" prints anyway. Do I wish the d40 had a built in lens motor? I do, though most of the newer Nikon lenses (including the kit lens) have the motor built-in. If you are new to the Nikon line, you probably won't have to worry about this. If you have some old Nikon lenses, manual focusing isn't terribly difficult, and I do it all the time with my Nikon 50mm f/1.8D which doesn't have the focusing motor in it. I've

This is a user-friendly camera for first-timers which features an auto mode but you can switch to various help programs in manual mode. This is a great feature for helping photographers migrate from point and shoot to a D-SLR format. It's not as robust as most cameras but then again, the next step up requires a heftier budget. The images are great - even if it's "only 6.1 megapixels"... how much can the eye really see? It's a great camera for the money and photo quality is better than average. And most importantly, it's the right price!!

We waited a long time to buy our first digital camera because my husband is a fairly serious amateur photographer (had his own developing lab in high school and college) and wanted to wait until he could get a good one. Finally, a little over a year ago, and after much research, we bought a Nikon D40. My husband is very happy with it. He knows how to get the most of it in challenging situations. I like it because it's easy to use and takes beautiful, effortless pictures. We're a family of eight and are always on the run for various activities. Because of its excellent performance in lower light situations, we often end up as informal group photographers. We've noticed that its capability in low light situations rivals and occasionally surpasses some of the more expensive cameras we've had a chance to compare it too - e.g. for a big family picture at a wedding in church. Very impressive! I'm pretty impressed with its durability too. It actually got dropped off a table at one point (the

I read all the reviews and this camera is just as advertised. Great system for an entry level digital SLR. I would recommend this camera to anyone making the jump from a point and shoot. Definately worth the money!

This review is more about SLR's in general than this specific camera but this is the camera i purchased so this is where my review goes...I bought this camera while station in afghanistan, i was very excited, with thoughts of someday seeing my photos in magazines, then i started messing with the camera...i played with it for a few days maybe a week, then placed it back in the hard case i purchased for it and there it sat for over two years until my mom decided she was going to try her luck with an SLR. the reasons this camera was not used are listed below: 1. I was very intimidated by this cameras price . With the lens i purchased i had over 1200 strapped around my neck, the few times i had it out i always felt like the strap was going to come undone and the camera was going to go crashing to the ground! this never happened but it was a fear i could not shake. 2. I was very intimidated by this cameras complexity. I bought the idiots guide to SLR's and all of that and just never really

I bought this camera as a gift to my mom. The nikon website www.nikondigitutor.com helped me familiarize its features and I love it! I'm sure my mom will love it too. I wish I bought this item before I went to Italy.
Bestbuy has a great financing offer of 18 months interest free when you use your bestbuy credit card. I felt like a pro whilst taking pictures!

This camera is exceptional when contrasted with others in the same area of functionality. Battery life leave little to be desired, and the resolution levels available and the speed with which you can operate this is unrivaled. The one thing I would say to get along with this, especially if there is a deal to be had, is additional lenses. It comes standard with the 15-55 mm lense, but the ability to zoom distances really requires up to a 300 mm or so. And they are expensive, so consider any package including one of that caliber.

The Nikon D40 is a great dSLR that's rugged and takes outstanding pictures. It's lightweight body is a dream when you're shooting active lifestyle activities. I hiked 40+ miles over 4 days on the Rogue River trail carrying it in my hand 80% of the time. It's that light.
The battery lasts forever on a charge and the Nikor lenses give great quality pics.

This is the best camera for anyone looking to get started in photography. It is really easy to use. You don't really need to know a whole lot about the settings when you start off and you will still be able to take really good pictures. I have recommended this camera to a few friends and they absolutely feel in love with it. A definite must have camera!!! 100% better than any point and shoot camera you can buy in this price range. I have had this camera for over a year and people always ask me if I take professional pictures because they just come out that good!

I've been away from photography for many years and decided to get back into it. After a fair amount of research, bought a D40 and a couple of basic 'toys' to go with it. A value for the money machine like this is very rare. Most machines are commanding a higher price, and justify it by adding 'features/gimmicks' that are of no interest or are of questionable value to my style of photography. I was impressed enough that after seven months I just bought another for a backup. Sadly, the D40 is being replaced - and I don't see another unit that matches its price/performance. Very good image 'out of the box', even better with minor post-processing with a freeware editor such as Irfanview. I can usually nitpick something to pieces, but it's very hard to find any major faults with the way I use it. All in all, a very nice machine - and at Amazon's latest price, an excellent value.

I got the D40 in March, and I absolutely LOVE it. It takes the most amazing pictures. I'm not into professional photography, I just bought it to take pictures of my boys, but it is everything I hoped for. It is so easy for me to use. I keep it on automatic focus, so I just point and shoot. I bought the extra zoom lens for it and the pictures really are unbelievable. I love that I can zoom in further on the camera itself and save it without losing the picture quality.

I debated for a while between getting a SLR and a regular point and shoot camera for a while. But, I am so happy I decided on the D40. The camera is awesome! Small and lightweight, but takes some of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen. DONT LET THE 6.1 MEGAPIXELS FOOL YOU! The only reason you need a camera with higher megapixels is if you plan on printing really, really big photos.
I need a camera to bring with me when I go abroad to Australia, and I decided on a SLR because I wanted to take more spectacular pictures while on my trip than a regular point and shoot. The point and shoot I was looking at, its best pictures were still worse than any picture with the D40.
This is my first SLR camera and it was so easy to learn how to use. Take 20 minutes to read the manual and you will know it all. This camera is very user friendly and easy to learn, even if you are new at the SLR game.
It feels good in the hand, very comfortable. The automatic mode takes great

After seeing this camera, I must have it for my classroom! It will be great to use with my children as I plan lesson plans for my profound mentally handicapped children and regular education children. I can use this to make creative lesson plans on an interactive board. The fact that this camera has a continuous shooting mode will be very useful when I facilitate a career fair for my 4th - 5th graders.

Ordered my Nikon D40 on Sunday, received it on the following Wednesday... Great service by Amazon. The camera is exceptional! I showed it to a friend of mine, a professional photographer and he was amazed at the camera (he's a Canon guy) and even more amazed at the price. I have been interested in photography for a long time but haven't had a SLR since the film days. I am having lots of fun with the D40, its hard to take a bad picture when you use the automatic mode. Since I got the camera I have purchased a UV Filter, Remote Control, Gorillapod and a Crumpler Camera bag and have been doing a lot of reading and experimenting. Thanks KenRockwell.com for the recommendation and the tutorials.

I am a complete noob when it comes to SLRs. After researching DSLRs for a month or so, I decided on the D40. I am extremely happy with the choice. I've bought a D40 book and have been teaching myself how to use it to get the best possible shot. Its easy to use, the menus are self explanitory and easy to navigate. The kit lens that comes with it is a little junky, you're going to want to upgrade that pretty quickly. My standard kit is a Sigma f/1.4 50mm and a Nikon 55-200 AF VR. I rarely find myself in situations that these 2 lenses wont do what I need them to do. If you're looking for a great entry level DSLR, this is the one to get.

[...] I found that it has all the features that I need/want and was a lot less money than the cameras that I was considering (Nikon D5000 or D90). Easy to use and great pictures.

This is a great camera, especially as little as it costs. When I first bought a d40 it cost near 600 dollars, and it was still well worth that then. Some might find the 6.1 megapixels as too little, but really unless you are wanting to print out some massive pictures then 6 will cover all your needs. I am a recently graduated graphic design student and it has served me well in all my endeavors with it.
While I feel if you really want to learn SLR photography, film is the place to really learn, a d40 does great at providing all the options you need to really start exploring the creative possibilities of photography. And it also still works great as just a point and shoot on auto, only with my better quality and response time than a regular point and shoot.
In general if you want a digital SLR without spending a ton then go buy this camera.

Great camera. If you need more than what this camera gives, you shold purchase a Hasselbad. Easy to use-sharp photos with both lens. Have used it local and on a trip to Banf, Cansda and recorded the Calgary Stampede and show. Ansel Adams would have gone nuts with this camera and the Canadian Rockys. The battery has a long life. The on camera flash works well up to about fifteen feet. But an SB400 flash. Contact me at "[...] and I will email youa couple of photos. There are other fine cameras out there but the my final judgement was made after seeing the Nikon website and the online hoto program describing exactly how the camera function and examples of how each mode functions. Better than any written manual that I have ever seen.

I got the Nikon D40 as a starting photography camera for myself and found it to be very easy to use. The lens was easy to attach and scrolling through the different settings and features were easy as well. I would definitely recommend this camera to any beginning photographers or anyone interested in photography.

I purchase this camera only two days ago and I'm already hooked! The picture quality is amazing! I don't have any previous experience with SLR cameras so I'm still studying up. The best part is that in the meantime the Auto feature works so well that I'm still getting amazing results!

has beautiful colors, its easy to use, small, light, and good price. really good for begineers. But if you trying to go pro not for you. you cant use the slave flashes or any external lighting systems. Alot of lenses are manuel focus on this camera. Because that the focusing moter is not in the camera it is in the lenses that are made for the camera. So if you just looking to have fun taking pictures, your a begineer, and need something better than a point and shoot, and need something cheaper this is a great choice for you!

I had a small go anywhere digital camera but got fed up with the digital zoom. I couldn't zoom in on anything with out it being pixelized. I also I hated using AA batteries because they don't last long. I had to get a camera w/ optical zoom and a lithium battery. This camera is a bit big for travel but the image quality is well worth the size of the camera. I love being able to zoom in on faces and see the sharpness in the image. I would definitely recommend this camera if the ability to zoom in and take close up pictures as well as image quality are important factors for you.

This camera practically doesn't need reviews. It's a Nikon. And I'm sure it's the best cost x benefit available for a Nikon digital SLR camera. Specially if your are no professional photographer like me.
My advise: buy the basic camera and than choose a camera-less kit that better suites your needs.
And don't forget that the camera doesn't have any internal memory and doesn't come with any memory card either.

This is my first SLR camera and I love it. Very easy to use and takes the best pictures. I've entered a few in contests and have taken home either 1st or 2nd place every time. I would recommend spending a little more money the anti-vibe lenses to take the best shot every time.

This is my first (and probably last) DSLR camera. I am very pleased with it. I purchased it after a lot of research because I wanted the most camera I could get without a large investment. I also wanted a camera that wouldn't require the next year or so to learn how to use it. This camera really fills the bill. Recently took it to Rocky Mtn. Nation Park and produced excellent photos. I have several Nikon digital point and shoot camera's but the photo results and quick shutter of the D40 can't be compared to the point and shoot camera's. The Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm review settled the decision to but this camera. I'm glad I did. Now for a good flash; the remote and a telephoto.

First digital camera. My pictures have NEVER come out so true to life and beautiful. I bought this camera as a gift to myself. I use to buy cheap cameras and the majority of the pictures came out terrible. I started reviewing digital cameras and decided to give this one a try. The colors are vivid. I took about an hour to read the manual and then I gave it a try. I either leave the dial on Auto I'll adjust it to the settings for a child or for a landscape. It takes excellent pictures with low light. I took picture of my kids swimming and it captured every detailed of the water, the water droplets from splashing and all. 100% satisfied chica!

Nikon D40 was our first DSLR purchase. Before this we have owned only point and shoot cameras. My colleague and friends convinced me to go for a DSLR. After a lot of reaseach and much debate, we went for the Nikon D40 instead of D60 or D90. I am glad that I went for the Nikon D40 because it is a great entry level camera. I am an amateur and the feature set is just right. It took me about 30 minutes of reading and playing with the camera to figure out the basic modes and start shooting. Took it to Europe and it did a great job in taking the pictures. My wife took a lot of pictures from a moving car and they came out great. The pictures of the Swiss Alps were just amazing along with Lake Luzerne and other pictures
The only drawback is the basic lens. It works fine on landscape. However, the zoom is not enough if you want to take the picture of an individual who is more than 10-12 feet away. If you want to do that, you would have to get an additional lens. Overall, I love the

I am a Canon fan when it comes to point-and-shoot pocket size cameras. For me, money can't buy a point-and-shoot camera better than an Elph. When it came time to upgrade to a DSLR, I chose Nikon. I have friends in the photography business (Weddings) and they always choose Nikon over Canon. That said, both brands are great. I do not consider myself a profession, but more of an prosumer. I chose the D40 because I wanted a lightweight DSLR for vacations and college football games. Yes, this camera is great for college football. While it only does 2.5 frames/sec, I find that it is more than enough for my needs. You can get more megapixels now, but it is not necessary. Most will probably choose the D60 or the new D5000 over the D40. When I chose the D40, I was choosing based on several factors, including price. The D40 was the least expensive at the time. Plus, I put the money I saved into extra betteries and memory cards. 6.1 megapixels is enough for me and I feel that it is a

I've been a photographer for 40 years, up till now only with film cameras. My past includes a number of years as a professional doing weddings, portraits, families, etc. I decided recently to invest in a better than average digital and, having owned Nikons since the mid-70's (F2A still works great!), I figured the choice of Nikon was simple. I found the instruction manual a bit overwhelming - especially for a guy who is so comfortable with a camera it's like an extention of my hands. Once you get used to all the features, indicators, etc, it's pretty easy to use. Overall the fit and feel is great, seems like a pretty durable piece of equipment. But there are a couple of issues with the camera. The first is how tiny many of the symbols and lights are - would be much easier on my eyes to have less information but have it bigger! Secondly, the camera consistently over exposes by 2/3 to 1 full stop. I later found that this is a well documented issue discussed in many online forums. Yes, you

when I got this purchase, I took it to anywhere with me to take pictures of many things immediately.. First thing I was awakard with nikon technical becuase i did not used to this brand. I am huge fan of Canon brand things, so I used to this.. But I still (in progress) learn how to use nikon d40, it is good for me as beginner and help me getting more experience with this before buying expensive dslr camera.. Overall, I like this purchase, and I am happy it is worth my money for this.. P.S. I want to buy extra lens to get better closer pitures. :)

I bought this camera from Amazon.com in March of 2008 and wanted to really use this camera before writing my review. Prior to purchasing a DSLR, I had used several 35mm SLR's including Yashica and several Minoltas. My 'transition' to digital was forced when my Minolta X700 finally broke and I purchased an Olympus point-and-shoot. Having been an (amateur) SLR user for so many years, I was never quite satisfied with a point-and-shoot when it came to capturing action shots of people and my kids. [...]

I purchased a Nikon D40 this is my first SLR camera. I have to tell you, I purchased this camera to take pictures of a wedding for someone and I hit payday. It is a great camera, I purchased an additional lense from sigma and I am taking pictures galore. There is no complaint from this girl. The only thing I would suggest is to purchase other lense's with it. Other than that this is the camera to buy whether you are a newbie or experienced photographer.

The D40 is a great way to step up from a point-and-shoot camera to a DSLR, whether you want to expand your creative possibilities, experience excellent image quality in a wide range of lighting, take pictures of action without the annoying shutter lag, pose as a professional photographer, or all of the above.
First, I like the light weight of the camera. It allows me to easily carry it around wherever I go, along with a few compact lenses, always ready to capture the moment as it happens. That's a huge image quality advantage over an expensive camera and a bag-full of exotic lenses that you left at home because it was too heavy to drag around.
Secondly, this camera has plenty of smart features which enable less fiddling around with the settings and allow me to focus on taking the picture. Some examples I like are:
* Customizable ISO-Auto function allows me to set the maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed I want, thereby eliminating the need to manually adjust ISO for different lighting

I love this camera. So easy to use -- takes minutes to learn all of the features. Ability to edit photos on the camera makes the camera convenient to use. You don't have to know a lot about photography to use it, It's pretty simple even on manual settings. But if you're a veteran of the SLR, you'll appreciate this camera as much as the novice. A really good buy for the price.

I was in a confusion whether to buy a D40 or a D60 and settled for this. I could use the difference to buy additional lenses. Dont worry about pixels. I could print pictures biggers and still cant make out any difference. I could take really amazing pics and some of them became wallpapers in many of my colleague's laptops. But still, try to buy a package with a 55-200mm lens and a Nikon Bag. Its really worth it. The basic 18-55mm is just a 3x zoom and it is good only for in-house parties. But the moment you go outdoors you will find it highly insufficient. I still rated this a 5-star, because it is my mistake that I bought the camera seperately instead of a package. I have now bought a 55-200mm and NIkon bag seperately and paid $100 more.

I debated a while before settling with the D40. The reason I did was because this was my first foray into the DSLR tier and wanted to make the safest investment. Boy, am I satisfied. The ability to have control over the different settings of a shot makes taking better pictures gratifying. All the features associated with the D40 are user friendly and nice. There is no built in image stabilization, but have noted any real issues. I was able to get the 55-200mm lens and a tutorial DVD in a price comp. So I am definitely excited about this new camera. If you want more megapixels, go with the D40x or D60.
Don't give up...practice makes perfect. I am hoping to be to move up to better cameras in the future just as soon as I can get the down pat.

This is my first DSLR camera . I bought it 3 months ago as the package with the 2 lens, 18-55 and 55-200mm. Both the 18-55 and the 55-200 are not the VR (Vibration Reduction) lens at $590.54 out the door. No Bag. I bought the bag separate 2 weeks ago for $60. The Nikon bag specifically for the D40/D40x/D60. That bag included a book and a DVD. Very helpful. I was able to take great pictures straight out of the box. The firmware was already updated with the latest firmware. I recommend joining Nikonian.org for the beginners here. I have been able to learn allot through them. Recommendations of speed lights, lens, tripods and other accessories. Next Nikon will be a D90.

The D40 is a great camera for beginner photographers. The menu's on the camera itself explain and are easy to read everything you need to know. Im only 17 and am starting to understand everything about the camera, and i just bought it 6 hours ago.

You never know what you are going to get when you purchase something used. Plus, some people lie. But I was amazed at the kindness of my seller and the almost perfectly new-ness of the camera I ordered from her. It was still in the original box and came with lots of extra goodies for it. I'm not even sure if she's actually used it. It was shipped and received here days before I was even expecting it. I was quite happy. Camera works great for someone who doesn't know the technical side to photography---which is me. I wanted it mostly for my Africa mission trip this summer, but I have been playing with it already and am loving it. The only thing i miss is that there is no video on it---and I like to take short video clips.

I bought this camera on March 9th 2009 to take pictures of my grandson in his diving competitions. I didn't know if I was getting in over my head but from what I could research on the internet this seemed to be the simplest to learn and a great brand. I purchased the DVD's basically for dummies as I didn't really want to read the instruction manual if I didn't have to. I am kind of a hands on person when it comes to learning. This camera pretty much self explains itself with the menu's. Not sure if I will ever get into any advanced features but so far I am thrilled. Now I can take those action shots of my grandson starting and completing the dives I missed before.
If you are having any doubts put them aside as I am 58 years old and was able to take this out of the box and begin shooting right away.. Good luck everyone and enjoy..

The nikon D40 has outstanding picture quality even with 6mp (which is crazy how people think they need 10mp or more to have a good picture, WRONG) The design is easy for everyone for kids, adults, professionals, and the elderly. The D40 is the most compact Nikon digital SLR ever, featuring intuitive controls and an ergonomically designed operation that even first-time SLR users can enjoy. But there is one problem theres not as many features as a olympus E-410 or E-420, like Image Sensor Cleaning for protection against dust and/or optical image stabilization.
But out of all this camera is spactacular for familys and its small so you can store it in your medium or large purse but its not small enough to fit in you coat pocket.

I'm a photography hobbyist and this was my first dive into the SLR world. With a little patience and research I have come a long way since the first day, but this camera made it a lot easier.
The settings are intuitive and uncomplicated. The camera itself is lightweight and durable.
The quality of the pictures are fantastic with the included 18-55 kit lens.
I love this camera and would definitely recommend to anyone starting out with their first SLR.

I spent so many hours playing with this camera in the store and reading about it online. The guy at Best Buy recommended this one and I am very happy with the purchase. It was really easy to use right out of the box and I'm having fun learning the more advanced techniques. The only bad thing is it on autofocus with lenses made like tens years ago, but I'm not trying to buy old and used lenses anyways. Great starter camera!!

This is the first DSLR camera I have purchased and so far I have absolutely loved it. On my first day of using it I brought it to a Portland PIrates hockey game and the results were astounding. The pictures were taken with the standard 18-55 mm lens.

The sheer quantity of excellent reviews already posted here for the D40 would leave me nothing to add were it not for the possibility that my perspective might be useful to a certain subset of possible buyers. I purchased the D40 as a first DSLR, but not as a first SLR. As a former film SLR shooter getting back into SLR photography after a long absence, I was convinced by the many very positive reviews of the D40 that it would provide an excellent entry point. Ken Rockwell's rave reviews, in particular, had a strong influence on my decision, as did many of the favorable reviews posted here.
In retrospect, for somebody in my position, I think that perhaps some of the D40's positives have been slightly overstated, and some of the negatives slightly understated. I would suggest that any prospective purchasers who feel they might aspire to any level of seriousness in their photography should give careful consideration to whether the D40 will be truly satisfactory to them beyond the short

If you are ready to drop the point-and-shoot world, but don't want to spend a lot of money then get the Nikon D40. Definitely need to get at least a 4GB SD card and 2 lenses. I recommend the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm as a good start.

I went to buy the D60 and they were out of them. I settled for the D40 and i am completely satisfied so far. I went from a Kodak Easy Share and I wanted a camera that you press the button and it constantly took pictures...no delay! I am loving it already. I will really find out for my daughters gymnastics exhibition........

Okay this is my first SLR camera and I have to say I only got it last weekend and I know every feature. The buttons are very simple, giving you a picture to go along with what your trying to do (Such as a baby icon, you click for children portraits). Iam very happy with the camera its a great size to bring with you where ever you go, I suggest it to anyone who wants to bring their photography up a notch from the normal digital cams.
I LOVE THIS CAMERA!, GET IT!!

I love this camera. Bought one from Best Buy last year. It has made me a digital SLR convert. Just got another for my daughter.
Surprises:
The 6.1 MegaPixel image size is plenty for great pictures. How often do any of us blow up a pic bigger than 10x13 inches anyway? Plus, the pixel sensors have to be smaller on the higher resolution cameras, which makes them need brighter light than this one. This has turned out to be the most important fact I can tell you about this camera - It makes better pictures BECAUSE of the lower MegaPixel number. Really.
Complaints:
It feels a bit small in my very large hands, though its ergonomic shape lessens the consequence of that. The life of the included rechageable battery is amazingly long. Still, I wish it came with an extra, so much so that I bought one. I have a talent for running my battery out right in the middle of a photo event.
Praises:
Images are sharp and clean. Color rendering is bright. Auto mode works so well I rarely

What's not to love about this camera? It's an affordable little powerhouse! True, it wouldn't be the choice of a professional sports photographer looking to capture 5-plus-frames-per-second of a high speed car race, downhill ski race, etc, but for the rest of us (casual sports shooters included} it's a steal of a deal -- and you'll appreciate its size and ultra-light weight after its been hanging from your neck all day!
A lot of the reviews here refer to the Nikon D40 as an excellent beginner's camera, starter camera, first DSLR camera, etc. -- I say baloney -- IT'S A EXCELLENT CAMERA, PERIOD!
This camera has more features than most of its owners will ever use. Many of the greatest photographers of the 20th century: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorthea Lange, Minor White, Alfred Eisenstaedt, etc. shot manual cameras with very basic controls for focus, f-stop, and shutter speed -- that's about it. The images these photographers shot are timeless and breathtaking in terms of the emotional

The only reason not to buy this camera over a point-and-shoot is size. If you absolutely must have a smaller camera, fine. If not, this camera will reward you with speed, ease of use, and good picture quality. The auto ISO setting works all the way to 1600, meaning you are unlikely to get underexposed or blurry shots. This camera is light enough to carry all day. The battery seems to last forever.
Critics will tell you this camera has no internal focusing motor, limiting your lens options. They'll tell you this camera is a cheap, plastic body SLR. They may gripe about the 6MP sensor. One thing however is true. Digital SLR bodies have a shelf life measured in months. There is no reason to invest big money on a DSLR body when they are being replaced on an annual basis (unless you are a pro). The smart money is spent on quality lenses and flash which will be around long after you've put your D40 out to pasture.

I owned a fuji 5200 but wanted faster taking photos I researched and saw that d40 was good I liked how fast you can take a photo plus the fact you can edit the photos in the camera

This was the first dslr I have ever bought and I have to say that I am very pleased with this product. It's ease of use makes it great for learning the key points of using a dslr. I have upgraded to the 40x which is identical but with the 10.2 megapixels. I recommend this camera to anyone wanting to get into photography but are scared of the complexity of a digital slr.

This is a truly awesome camera for the price! It takes amazing photos, is fairly lightweight, and affordable. I love that you have total control how your pictures will come out, like using 35mm. The instruction manual is a bit complicated, but there are so many things you can do with this camera! My husband and I love it!

This camera is a great starter SLR for anyone looking to get into the field. The shutter speeds are amazing and everything is easy to set up in the menu. I have never had a problem with mine, and it is a dependable camera! I would definitely recommend this camera to any one. One of the most user friendly cameras i have worked with!

OK.
For the record, I am not a professional photographer; however, I have blatant OCD about photo quality. I can find even the most innocuous flaw in a digital photo. I currently own an HP 6MP digital camera which was sufficient for the task, but required significant lighting for a decent photo, even with blinds open. While I didn't require anything higher, I wanted it. I wanted to see what I was missing. I am quite skilled at photo editing though. If I'm given a photo that doesn't look that great, I can make it look better - bring out the "pop" as it were. With that in mind, I went searching for a DSLR as I've seen numerous comments that any sort of professional-quality photos are not to be found anywhere else. Budget was of course a consideration; so I locked in on two in particular: a Sony, and this one.
NOTE: For quick and dirty bullets, skip to the end.
First, this camera cannot operate without the included detachable lens. This caught me off guard; From the pictures I'd

we are new to the slr cameras, and don't need much out of it - but this camera is awesome - and certainly fits all the needs we have. easy to use, great pictures, and excellent quality! the price couldn't be beat as well. we considered going to a more recent model - but for the increase in price - with features we would probably never use (or understand) - it was recommended to stay with the D40 and we couldn't be happier. i highly recommend it for all who want great picture quality, but don't want to spend $1000 for a camera that you just want for the basics...

I love this camera. I got the lens kit 55-200mm. Some people have posted saying it is not a good camera for sports but I have found that it takes fantastic shots of my sons soccer games. with the 200mm zoom lens it lets you get in close to the action and if thats not enough zoom for you you can do a zoom with the camera that lets you crop(trim) the picture on the camera setting. In this mode pictures that were maxed out on the 200mm zoom turned out incredible with the camera setting zoom and the nice thing about that is that it will not alter the original photo. My friend saw that I had a nikon and wanted to borrow it because he had a nikon that was older that took film. he saw the pictures and was blown away at how crystal clear the had come out with even the auto settings. He has mentioned he will be getting one soon. I do have a canon point and shoot that is close to five years old that had a lot of settings I used for soccer baseball and basketball. This camera was nice but when I was

I've always wanted a NIKON and finally got myself this D40 kit. With the 16gB card, @ Fine quality, I get 7800 pictures. This camera is SO easy to operate, specially for someone like me, who has a long way to go to use all the features in this SLR. Picture quality is AMAZING both with and without flash. I just wish that it had a Video shoot mode, but neverthless, this model is just the BEST I have had and will be a part of my life for a long time to come. Anyone who buys this D40, WILL NOT regret the purchase. Thank you NIKON. My kudos also to PC Connection for their excellent service.

I have owned my Nikon D40 for about 6 months and I love it. It is easy to use, has great features and best of all, takes great pictures. I have great pictures from baseball, graduation, prom and vacation. I've gotten great pictures in nearly every situation, even low light indoor situations. The only struggle I've had is common with all photography, especially digital - indoor action shots. Even so, the pictures I've gotten with the D40 are better than those I've taken with other digital cameras. Initially, I had planned to by a Canon Rebel, but I'm so glad I went with the D40. For the price, there's no better deal out there.

This camera is great. I love that it helps you learn how to use a DSLR. Especially because this is my first one. It will actually tell you what you need to do on the screen. I have been able to capture some really great shots of my daughter with the 2.5 per second rapid shot feature that i had not been able to capture with my point and shoot camera. I also like that you can shoot in Raw+Jpeg create one image into each file for different editing purposes. It works great with both my Macintosh computers and I edit my RAW shoots using Aperture. Now I'm looking at buying the Nikon SB-400 flash for some better lighting get companion with the Nikon D40.

I originally bought a kodak z1015. Let me tell you - NO COMPARISON!!!
This camera has all the features and is relatively easy to use. It takes excellent pictures and is especially great to take action pictures.
If you are looking at taking pictures of anything in motion, go with this camera!

This camera is great for the person who wants to get a better camera for sports, nature, or whatever instead of getting a simple point and shoot camera. With the point and shoot cameras you are limited by the lens, they are more convenient but you sacrifice quality.
Where this camera shines for me is with sports photography. By adjusting some settings, i was shooting pictures 10x better than before. They were sharp, clear, and had great lighting.
The con is only there because I couldn't think of anything really for this camera.
You will enjoy this camera thoroughly.

I got Nikon D40 4 days back from BB. It was amazing buy, BB reps were great. This is my first DSLR.
Camera itself is amazing and there are no surprises that it is one of the highest rated DSLR. Its very compact for a DSLR and the kit lens is of decent quality. One of the best feature is inbuilt help. Camera tells you about what to do when you are doing something wrong (very ingenius feature). Also Nikon did an excellent job not to go after this insane mega pixel race. Keeping the same sensor size and packing insane amount of pixels has big detrimental effect on image noise level.
This camera is great because they have a DX sized sensor and 6.1 mpixels of high quality which comes out to be around 1.4 mpixels/cm2 (one of the highest).
Overall i'm a very satisfied Nikon owner.

This is the BEST camera I have ever owned! I am not a professional photographer (obviously or I would own a much more expensive camera) but nobody would ever know because I can now take professional quality photos with ease. Was very easy to setup and begin taking photos right out of the box. I will never own another brand of camera beside Nikon now. They got it right on in the D40! The only thing I would like to have added is a kit Vibration Reduction (VR) lens. I did buy the VR 55-200 Nikkor and only use it as it does everything I need. I would 100% recommend this camera to anyone interested in taking great photos and not wanting to spend thousands of dollars. Great product!!!!!

I am a photojournalist for a local paper and this is my "working" camera as well as the one I use for pleasure and enjoyment. I have used this camera for almost a year and cannot find anything to complain about. I use the 55-200 mm lens, the 50 mm AF lens in manual mode and the 18-55 mm lens. For walk around, every day work use I most often rely on the 18-55 mm lens.
My photos are crisp, sharp and dependable, something I need to be able to count on for work.

Our family just bought this camera 2 weeks ago. Our son plays football and I needed an upgrade. This camera takes great pics. I have been going through the manual to figure out how to do everything, but the auto always takes great pics. That's all I am doing know is taking pictures of everything. Highly recommend it!!!

I've used a 7.2 megapixel digital point & shoot for the past 4 years & loved it. I wanted to expand my photography knowledge & upgrade to a camera that could capture detailed portraits, fast action and nature. I read many reviews on DSL's, including ConsumerReports' and the Nikon D40 was consistently at the top of the list. I took the time to read every review on this site and was convinced that the D40 was the right camera for me. I also researched megapixels. What I had often heard was confirmed, you really only need a 6 megapixel camera for brilliant photos up to 8x10 to 11x14. Anything above 6 is a waste of money. That combined with suggestions written here to purchase the 55-200 Telephoto VR lens had me up and shootiing brilliant photos day one. See my photos attached. I also comparison shopped prices and got the camera and add'tl lens, leaving enough funds for me to purchase a Nikon bag which included a "How To Video." I would highly recommend this camera for the novice

This is my very first DLSR camera and I am so impressed. Because of that, my review may be considered biased since I really can't compare it much to other DSLR's. However, when you see a good picture, you know. I am a makeup artist so rather than spending $350+ per shoot to add to my portfolio, I decided to purchase an SLR camera and do my own. So far, I am dang proud of myself. I save money and have great portfolio photos.

The D40 is a great camera for the beginning photographer. I'm partial to Nikon cameras and will always shoot with them. I've moved up to high quality at this point, but the D40 is a phenomenal camera for the price, you won't be disapointed.

This is a solid choice for anyone just getting started with photography who wants the level of control and ability to use different lenses that isn't available with point-and-shoots. The camera takes great pictures and the options available from the easy-to-navigate menu system give the photographer lots of flexibility.
I bought mine mainly to use to photograph children's sporting events, most of which are indoors (volleyball and basketball). A fast lens is required for this (such as the 70-200mm f2.8) and so I've spent a lot more on the lens than on the camera. I've had pretty good success with this combination, although I throw away a lot of shots that are out of focus. The D40 has three focus points, which is two more than you need for landscapes and things that don't move, but it's somewhat of a hindrance, particularly for a newbie like me who is relying on the autofocus system to track fast-moving subjects. Nevertheless, I've gotten lots of great pictures.

I bought the D40 about a month ago and absoutely love this camera. If you are just getting into shooting with a digital SLR then this would be a perfect fit. From all the research that I did when choosing which Nikon to buy the D40, D60, or the D80. A professional photographer said save you money for a quality lense and buy the D40. That is what he primarily shoots with. This is the only Nikon Digital SLR that has a flash speed of 1/500 sec, the others the D60, D80, D300 which my husband owns only shoots at 1/250. Who would have thought with such a little camera. Save you money and buy this camera and get a good lense with your D40 like the 18-200 3.5-5.6 with VR. Also if you looking for a good little flash get the SB400. My husband plans on taking mine when he goes to shoot.
I love my D40

This is a good beginner DSLR camera, and the use of it is very intuitive. A person could pick this camera up and go without much learning time. The automatic focus makes it very simple to use, with manual settings for advanced use.
The only thing we found not to be intuitive was shooting video.
This was a beginning camera bought for a teenager, and I definitely think it's a best buy.

I purchased this about 18 months ago - and have absolutely been completely satisfied! I've owned two smaller versions of Nikon Digital Cameras, but the SLR is the best!
The photo quality is outstanding. The camera is very easy to use, with many options. I can use it for outdoor sports action, and indoor events as well. Sometimes the indoor shots are not as great if they are action shots - due to lighting. But, it isn't necessarily a "con".
Great investment!

It is easy to learn as this was my first purchase of such a high end camera. The picture quality is amazing with little effort except to turn it on. I would recommend taking the step if you are remotely considering this camera.

Wow, I love this camera. I have had a few SLR's and digitals. This camera makes taking professional looking shots...easy. The menu, the controls are easy to understand and use. You just can't touch the picture quality of the Nikon Lense. This camera replaced my Nikon Coolpix...from 1999! Now, that camera is making a new Nikon fan.

Upgraded from a point-and-shoot to this DSLR. Even though this is an entry level DSLR, it takes tremendous pictures. I shoot in auto mode 90-95% of the time and the pictures are incredible. Well worth the money. It is much larger than a point-and-shoot, but the pictures are worth the transportation hassle.

I went from a 35mm nikon to a pocket digital. Once the joy of no more developing fees, and film cost went away; i came to see the short comings of the pocket digital. No distance shots, light sensitivity at a minimal, and movement with the slilghtest hand movement.
I needed the feel of a real camera in my hands that i could be sure was steady. Needed something that would give consistent results. The constant charging of batteries was a trial when going to a family event where i wanted pictures.
The Nikon D40 feels like a real camera should. It has weight and steadieness that you can be sure of. It offers pictures that are large enough to crop without losing detail. The Details are fantstic on all pics there is little or no need to adjust in a computer program contrast etc. The battery took well over 700 pics before showing any decrease in power and the recharging time was short.
The Nikon D40 basically made taking pictures beyound just quick close snapshots possible. As a history

The camera feels great, very comfortable to hold. Very responsive. Works very well in low-light conditions. Options plentiful, but workable for someone new to DSLR's. The automatic settings do an excellent job of capturing the images, manual settings are easy to work. Highly recommended for anyone just starting out.

First thing, Why did I wait so darn long to buy this camera. It takes better pictures than anything I have used to date. It is easy to use, does everything automatically and I can see immediately if I got a good picture or not. The old cameras you take a picture, then go back home and get them developed. By that time you have left the area where the shot was taken, may never get back there and now found you have a lousy picture. With this digital, you can check the picture immediately, and if necessary take another one. My daughter used mine at Disneyland just before Christmas and fell in love with it. Not one bad picture out of 148 pictures. She wanted one so bad that the begging for Christmas started, so now we have matching D40's. The only complaint is that I was not offered a camera case (form fitting) for the camera. I must carry it in a bag. With my old Asahi Pentex K-1000 I had a form fitting leather case that protected the camera. I can't seem to find one for the d40. Great camera.

This camera is great. I got it very fast, which was a pleasent surprise since the ETA was several business days. When I opened it, I took it out of the box and started charging the battery while I read the info that came with the camera. It only took about 90 minutes to fully charge as opposed to the usual 4 to 6 hours on some batteries. This camera takes absolutely amazing pictures. I am upgrading from a point-and-shoot and am awestruck. I love this camera, and was pleased to find that Nikon was still turning out some great cameras. The lens, both of them, are fine for now, but I'll upgrade to more powerful lens soon. I HIGHLY recommend this camera to anyone looking for a nice DLSR, who doesn't want to pay a lot of money. If you're a pro and want a ton of other stuff, this is the only reason I would tell you NOT to get this camera. Otherwise, it's a great deal for the money and quality of product.

Don't let the small size fool you! It might be 6MP and just the lil sister of D-Cameras of the slr Nion line but she packs a punch with clarity even in the High ISO's or blowing up more.
I've taken some amazing photo's with this camera. Its very durable and easy to transport when in the field.
I wish the AF worked on my 300mm lense but it only works on the D80.
My first camera's I started with are Nikon FG and the FM10. So I had alot of nikon lenses and some AF "can't pass a good deal "
If your wanting a D-SLR or wanting to upgrade and able to use your nikor AF lenses "Not all older AF lenses work with this camera" its work every penny. Very afforable to get you started and learning to use the digital manual operations and settings.
My next camera purchase will be the D300! I can't wait to play!

About a week before my trip to Europe I decided to buy a good camera. I did some research on-line and kept seeing the D40 so took the plunge. I'm glad I did! It's my first DSLR, first Nikon, very easy to learn and use. The manual is pretty good and easy to understand. The camera has many options: you can let it think for you or go completely manual to create the shot, or do just about anything in-between. One of my friends, who bought a more expensive Canon for the trip, thought that I had photo-shopped some of the photos I emailed to her after the trip - no, they were straight from my D40! Great quality, long battery life - now I look for reasons to take photos around town. I took over a thousand photos and saved almost every one of them. I did not buy a telephoto lens due to my budget, and thought I might regret it, but after seeing the quality of my photos - no regrets. I'll be able to blow up my favorites without worrying about the quality. And I know that if I want to take photography

I got this camera on the memorial day sale and it was 469. I had all these giftcards and it turned out to be 336! What a steal. I love the wide selection of options. I'm a beginner to the SLR's but I got the hang of this easily. The pictures come out better than my aunts EOS Rebel (in our opinion). Overall, this is a great camera. If you're debating on getting it, go ahead, its worth every penny. I recommend getting a second, better lens, probably an 18-135 or 55-200.

As a professional photographer I don't like carrying my expensive gear all over but I love to take pictures when I can. This is where the D40 comes into play. I have even taken some great shot and even sold them online. I wish the iso went a bit higher than 1600 but other than that its solid.
