First the ink usage is absolutely the worst I have ever seen. It is really not the amount of ink it uses but the minuscule amount of ink that Epson loads in the cartridges. This problem is easily solved by using 3rd party inks and spongless refillable self resetting cartridges or even external ink tanks. This system will cost you approx. $50 but will save you that much in your first refill. Each spongless cartridge holds about 5 times the ink that is in an Epson cartridge and costs Penney's to fill. That said there is now a caveat to this -----The colors will not be as good as the Epson ink. This issue is 85% solved by profiling the new inks and this is time consuming but only needs to be done one time. I did not re-profile because I am not printing to resell and do not really care if the colors are a bit off.
Second issue which removed a star from my vote is that after printing a couple hundred CDs I started getting a paper jam error and had to restart the printer wasting more ink and

I bought this printer for a friend as a gift, when we took it out of the box to try it out, it did not work. It gave an error "ink not recognized". Called Epson and they sent new ink cartridges, a week and half later all was OK.
It was a sad gift to give because it sat there for two weeks. Once it got working she loves it.

This was my wife's Christmas gift for me a year ago. Yep, you guessed it. Two weeks after the warranty expired the printer stopped functioning properly. I get an "ink cartridge not recognized" error. Unfortunately I bought several genuine, Epson ink cartridges to find out the problem was with the printer. Epson tells me that fixing it might cost more than a new unit.
This is my fourth Epson printer and the other three lasted at least 1000 pages each. Perhaps this one has printed 150. So I'm left with the decision: fix it and salvage the $85 worth of ink laying about or just chuck everything and get something better. Even when it worked the prints weren't that inspiring. Sigh....

I bought this to print black text on dvd's. I would think that it is total over kill for this but I was using a r260 before. It broke after a year. I went with this figuring that Epson made the dvd/cd feed feature better and learned from their first design. I think they did redesign the feeder because it looks like this one works different/better. I also bought the two year extended warranty.
Now to the ink usage. I really can not believe how much ink this printer uses. When I first got it I was excited to run it through it's paces and see how fantastic the prints were. I will admit that they looked good. But the problem is, who on earth could afford to spend the money it takes to make these prints? I made about 20 prints at 4 x6 and printed out maybe 100 pages of black and white text. Also maybe 100 black text dvd's, with just a minimal title. That took two black cartridges and 5 color ones. I figure it would cost about 90 dollars to print 50 to 60 4 x6 photos. These are the same photos

For those of you who have complained about still having ink left in the cartridges but are getting an "out of ink" or "replace cartridges" message, just get a cartridge chip resetter for less than $10. This will allow you to reset the cartridge and and continue using the ink cartridge until it is really empty, plus you can use generic ink cartidges when printing non-photos and have those reset after you refill them with cheap ink. Do a search on google for an Epson R380 Chip Resetter and you'll get plenty of hits.. Jsut make sure not to over-use the cartridges after they are empty because it might damage the print head.

This is a recent review for anyone considering purchasing this printer.
To get to the point of this review first: BUY THIS PRINTER!
If you like to print your own photos at home, are conscious of how good prints look from one printer to another, meaning, you can tell a bad photo from a good one after it prints, then this printer is for you.
The R380 I own, is actually my second one. My son was kind enough to flood our bathroom on the first floor, and the printer in my office underneath took a bath. Fried it! :( Thankfully, I was able to find this printer for the cheapest around oddly enough, at CompUSA. Was very surprised to see that, and happy. Online had it cheaper, but with shipping and the wait, it wasnt worth it. I got mine for $109. So that is pretty reasonable.
The only downside of this printer like already mentioned, is the price $$$$$ of the ink. Very expensive. $119 will get you a full new set of the higher capacity inks. 50% more prints, but has yet to be truly found out if

This printer prints a very nice photo. Its no slower or faster than any other printer in its price range. Expect to replace 2 ink cartridges for every 75, 4x6 photo that you print. That will cost you at least $32. That comes to a cost of $.42 per 4x6 print and $1.40 per 8x10 print. Please note that is the cost of ink not paper.
When printing photos it only uses the LightMagenta, LightCyan and Yellow cartridges. Even if you print black and white photos, only those three are used. The Other 3 colors seem to come into play when you print Text and images on plain paper.
I have tested the printer on several papers and found the Claria Ink has some issues with some glossy papers.
The print head has the ability to print different size drops so you will get exceptianl prints.
Due to the high cost of ink I converted my R380 over to a Niagra Ink flow system. My ink now costs me .015 per 4x6 and .05 per 8x10. If you plan on doing a lot of printing I sugest you look into this system.

The epson cd dvd printers and others are great when the ink problem is solved. I just added a continuous ink supply with sponge-less cartridges for $50 which includes 720ml of ink, 1/10 the cost of ink when bought in bulk bottle and lasts longer. Go to ebay and put in continuous ink and your printers name. Or search "Super Smart Electronics" on ebay. Enjoy

In my usage of this printer, I believe Epson is making a killing on ink sales.
I only print on DVDs and only print black and just a few lines of text at that, yet the other colors also show the same decreased print level. I don't believe there is any actual sensor that detects the amount of ink in the cartridges. It is a counter so whether you use the color or not, each print counts against the cartridge. It is a falicy to say that it is because of 'cleaning', if that were true, I would have a whole lot of colored ink in the inside of the printer.
Also, I don't believe the cartridges that come with the printer are full cartridges either, they are pretty much just trial ones to get a few prints out of then they deplete very quickly. When I first plugged the printer in, the cartridges all read full, then printed a few prints, then they were already down to 75% full.
A big complaint also is that the cartridges are all sold separately - 6 cartridges all $14.95 or more each and black is

I bought this Epson R380 printer to print DVD labels, something it never managed to do completely, which is why I returned it. Epson seems to put all its technology into preventing Epson owners from using generic inks. Not only did this printer not print DVD labels, it was unable to print without problems JPEG images I had with over 20 MBs of data. To get it to do anything took time, the printer is in slow speed most of the time. I bought this printer to replace my Epson R220 printer, which first showed a message "service required," then shut down entirely when I made the mistake of shutting it off. Now the R220 just flashes red lights.
I am sure that there is a lawsuit wending its way through the courts over Epson's use of ink overflow pads in hidden recesses of the printer, pads which when soaked with ink cause the service shutdown. Before, Epson had to settle a class action over its use of software that indicated Epson cartidges needed replacing when they had ink left in the

I was originally looking at getting the Epson R1800 orR2400. I couldn't decide. After researching a little more,I came across the newly designed Claria Printers. Idecided, for the price, I couldn't resist. I purchased theR380 because it had the card slots and an LCD screen. Ifeither of those add-ons don't mean anything to you, the R260would be more than sufficient. My father-in-law is aprofessional photographer and looked over the prints I madewith the R380 (he has the 4800 pro I might add). The printswere amazing! Even more amazing was the speed. 8 x 10 inchprinters were timed in at around 1 min. 24 sec. The qualitywas as impressive! For the money, this is one of the topprinters on the market! Highly recommend.

I received the printer (as a great gift) on January 16th, I set it up and it wouldn't print - the ink cartridge holder seemed stuck in place. I called Epson who shipped me out a replacement with no charge or delay. I used that printer for two weeks and it quit. Same problem with the ink cartridge holder. Once again Epson customer service shipped me a new replacement printer. It worked for another two weeks and quit on me yesterday (same problem). So, I'll call Epson when they open tomorrow and try to upgrade to a new/different printer or try once again. The printing results are spectacular, especially when using Epson 4* glossy paper. Anyone else with problems??

Was ready to buy the R380. Our Kingston SD card did not work in the display models at BestBuy and CompUSA.
The Pic demo did not work in either store.
The same SD card works fine in both our digital cameras, as well as my Dell SD slot. One sales person tried the SD card in a neighboring HP photo printer, and it worked fine there.

I had my previous printer for 5+ years but my grandson needed one so I purchased this Epson thinking I could start printing photos with it. I'm ready to trash the darn thing. It uses ink like it's drinking water. I'm going to try and return it to Amazon.

Produces excellent photo prints when using Epson ink and paper. I just hope I can get near that quality with generics because it is pointless to spend so much on Epson's inks and paper when you can get your prints so much cheaper at a photo lab. If you've got plenty of money to burn, you'll be happy with the results you get from this printer. My advice, though, would be to find something that consumes less ink.

I got my printer two days ago. I printed some of the paper I got here at B&H in it. The INKPRESS Photo Chrome Lustre paper, looks gorgeous! Just choose to let Photoshop determine colors if you are using PS I can't wait to try out some more paper types. I will be looking for a glossy that will work with it, however, Kodak's Premium Photo Paper was horrible...(below)

I like the printer's feature set a lot - nice LCD, can print on CDs, black text looks nice (if only they would include a duplexing capability!). So far, I've only printed two things (a CD, and then a page on plain paper of some color stripes) and color rendering on both appeared washed out (dark blue on the computer display printed as medium to light blue on the CD / paper). I'm hoping that the manual discusses how to fix these issues so I'm not too worried yet (hence 4 stars - if I were to discover this was not fixable then I'd lower it to 2 stars - after all, what is a printer for? To print :-) All the features in the world don't do much good if the output looks bad). The other negative is that it looks like it's going to cost $120 to refill the printer with ink (that's using the cartridges that are filled with a greater quantity of ink at $19.99 each from Epson). And so far I've not found anyone discounting these Claria inks. If other reviewers know of some 3rd party inks that work well,

I bought this printer on 14th December. It is January 7th and already out of ink. I've printed less than 50 text pages and about 5 photos although the photos are excellent.
Everytime I print something it cleans the heads and the indicated tank level drops by about 10%. All six of the tanks have dropped by the same amount so its not from printing.
Do I spend $120 on the larger inks so that it has clean heads for a whole month or find a different printer?
