One thing to understand about the Alpine Type-R subwoofer is the way it works in both a trunk and a hatch. I have a sealed box with about 1.3 cubic feet of air movement room inside of the box, its just about the perfect amount for a good mix of both blary and punchy bass from this subwoofer. You have to take into consideration the kind of car its going into, what kind of bass you want and of course the size of the enclosure you're buying.

There is also the break in period for the subwoofer which is a few weeks at the least up to a few months depending on how much you play the woofer. I would recommend a good amount of low deep bass to get it functioning to its optimal ability.

I have owned a lot of Alpine Components and have never encountered a single issue with any of them. They are well made products and they offer top notch specifications, excellent options for their products and competitive prices. Don't think twice about this subwoofer, its an awesome purchase.

The manual claims an optimum minimum internal enclosure volume of .7 ft3.

Wow.

I was a thump punk, 20 years ago. The rule of thumb for older drivers seemed to be about 1 ft3 for a 10" (give or take for specific parameters). I couldn't believe that this meteor of a sub would get room to breate in a <ft3 box.

But, I built it, anyway.

I deviated from the recommended dimensions, but maintained the optimum minimum internal volume. I used poly-laminated particleboard since 1) I had some on hand and 2) was unwilling to pay a premium for MDF, since my PLP would be airtight, as well. I put 8 oz. of polyfill in.

I dropped the SWR-1242D in the box and bolted it down. The SWR-1242D in a <1.0 ft3 box = 62 lbs.

It's fantastic.

Here's some observations I have made.

1 - The voice coil is exposed. You can see it if you look in the gaps in the frame/basket. Keeping that in mind, you should make sure your box is not going to have any debris flying around. If particulate gets in the air gap, you may have an issue. I don't know that, for certain, but it sure looks like it. Some subs vent out the coil cap, the SWR-1242D vents out the basket. That's nice if you want to minimize the height of your enclosure. I does look like debris could get in the side vents, though.

2 - If you put this in a tight sealed enclosure, you may need a nuclear power plant to drive it to your desired decibel level. My Sony amplifier is powerful enough to run this sub at a level that will put a smile on my face. In order to do so, however, it requires me to expose my amp to the operator environment while driving on the freeway with the windows open. The amp gets way too hot, too quickly.

3 - The sealed box/sub combo I used allows me to hear accuracy my Sony sub/box configuration just would not reproduce. The SWR-1242D is so much better at creating distinguishable tones. In addition, the constructive interference set up by the subs tonal accuracy really enhances the stock satellite speaker sound. I have had several people ask me what I use for my front soundstage. When they realize it is stock, they marvel. I do, too.

I will be replacing my Sony amp with the Alpine MRP-M1000, I hope that will give me more dynamic feel, while resisting the need to thermal protect. There seems to be a lot of good reviews about that appliance, too.

Bottom line: I like the sub for it's contribution to the quality of a factory OEM audio system. I think it is an excellent value. I have not heard, nor do I desire to evaluate, every sub that has been manufactured. I just wanted big sound for small money. The SWR-1242D delivered just that, in a tiny box in my trunk.
