The Pentax K10d is a very nice camera. I used a Pentax ist Ds for 3 years before purchasing the K10d. Both of these cameras are very well built and have a solid feel. In fact, I didn't buy a Canon digital rebel initially because it felt cheaply made compared to the Pentax ist DS camera. If you like the feel of quality you'll know what I mean when you hold the K10dThe controls on the K10d are also very well thought out. Buttons are placed well and all the important features are easily adjusted without having to scroll through pop up menus. Even the rocker switch for ISO, flash, white balance, and shooting mode is very easy to use. It is easy to change any of these functions on the fly.I shoot a lot of photos including hockey photos. I am very impressed with the performance of the K10d. Fast focusing with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens and low noise at ISO 800.I would highly recommend this camera to enthusiasts. I just write this review for people who want to get into DSLR like me a month ago. For years, I just held the camera then point and shoot, didn't even know anything about the important of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. I bought a Canon S3 IS as planning to take pictures of my daughter birthday party to come, and then the S3 went half dead just after 2 weeks with rarely used. I went to look for another camera and asked for opinions on various forums, then there were some advises that I should go for a DSLR camera. I was kind afraid of my lacking knowledge in photography that could end up in getting a camera, and then don't know how to use it. But out of curiosity, I went and researched then compared specs, features, reviews, and hand feels from various models of Olympus, Sony, Canon, and Nikon; all except the Pentaxes - non available in stores in my area. But all the cameras I'd tried, non gave me a satisfaction feel in my hand, then I spent more time in researching into the Pentaxes.

I have had a lot of experience using d-slr cameras as wellas film cameras. In my opinion this is one of the bestcameras out there. Why? Because it meets or exceeds most ofthe demands of shutterbugs out there. You can shoot andprocess raw format easily, the color is beautiful andstrong, the camera has a great solid feel and build quality,and you can mount any pentax lens, screw mount or bayonet,as well as autofocus lenses. The battery holds its chargeforever and the viewfinder is one of the best designsgoing. The camera has a 10.1 meg sensor, with excellent lownoise reduction. I have to say that I have never been apentax shooter and come from the Nikon/Canon camp. But inthe digital world for the money the k10d is a better camerathan the 30d and will hold its own against the 40d whichis near twice the cost. So far I've owned this camera for a month or so now. I'dimmediately suggest getting the Sigma 28-200 mm lens becausethe kit lens is pretty boring. But it most certainly is abeautiful piece of glass, I'd just suggest getting somethingelse as a useful add-on. As far as picture quality goes, ican't imagine it getting much better. I love the interface,its fantastic. One thing that will bug me about most camerastoday, is they don't like to get a bad picture. Sometimes ithink a picture is fine and then it'll begin focus hunting.I believe a fix for this is to open up your aperture a bitmore, or just manually focusing on these moments (greatdistance or low light). I honestly think the body is quiterugged but i am too scared to drop it, thus it appears to bein prefect condition. If your starting out without many orany other-name brand lenses I'd suggest going with thePentax K10D. Having Adobe DNG for my RAW Files and Adobe RGB for color is great, as well as the other features that save time in the digital darkroom, and editing in the field lets you can change settings.I also love setting the extended bracketing in user mode when Im changing the white balance, or using continuous at a higher ISO setting in user mode. It lets me use any mode straight-up then go back to my many different settings in user mode and capture a lot of photos A.S.A.P. more like a pro model than an inexpensive model. I love having the 1.5 Lens Factor make my 100-300mm lens work like a 150-450 before I add a teleconverter but I cant wait for Pentax to come out with a camera with no lens factor so my 20mm works like a 20mm instead of a 30mm, Im sure i will be able to afford one in a couple years or so when the price comes down and the quality gets better.

Jpeg files are definitely soft, which I expected. Do your self a favor and shoot RAW only and convert with Adobe Raw. DO NOT use the supplied software. I used Benjamin Kanarek post processing method. Do a search on Pentax life. TIFF files were definitely sharp using a 43mm 1.9 Feel is excellent, grip ties everything together. very solid feeling to the camera. Easy to use. Battery had a substantial charge out of the box which was nice.

I have always used Pentax. The K1000, the ME Super, the *ist DS, and now the K10D. For me, value for my dollar is very important, and no advanced amateur DSLR out there delivers like the K10D.Sure, there are more expensive pro DSLRs that have an edge on the K10D, and maybe a few similarly priced advanced amateur cameras with a bell or whistle that the K10D doesnt have, but when you consider the complete package - the ruggedness, the photo quality, and the improved user interface - the K10D rules the field. Pentax quality and reliability are legendary. Every camera I've owned from Pentax has delivered years of reliable service. The only problem I've ever had with a Pentax was when I put an off-brand lens on my *ist and dislodged the aperture release spring. Pentax made the repair and I discontinued use of the lens.I am an amateur photographer. I'm going to keep this brief and straight to the point. If you are looking to buy a DSLR with between 8-10 MP, buy this one. Dont waste your money on a canon or Nikon. Your only paying for the name with those brands. Many features that the other guys just dont have....mainly the 72 weather seals. Find a canon or Nikon in this price range that offer that!! You wont. Thank you Pentax for listening to the people that matter most, your customers!!

I have shot with many cameras and really enjoy the pentax way of doing things. I find the k10d to be the most ergonomically sound camera. I have tried this with several bodies, nikon D70, D200, canon 30D, 5d, or 1dmarkIIn and it seems the k10d is the easiest camera to instantly shift shooting parameters on the flythe k10d is customizable to individually adjust all parameters with the right hand only. this is a very unique and important function for sports/photojournalists who need to make lightning quick adjustments on the fly.with my k10d, and pentax proprietary hyper function dials, i can adjust AV, TV, EV, ISO, Focus points, and all without ever taking your eye off the viewfinder and with only one hand. most cameras require 2 handed operation and with visual confirmation from the top lcd. with the k10d theses parameter changes are confirmed in the viewfinder. many have stated other cameras are just as easy, but i have experimented with most cameras, and none are as efficient

Pentax has a winner with the K10D. Magazine and online reviews have been very positive, many giving this camera recommended to highest recommendation ratings. Thanks to recent firmware updates, white balance & image sharpness has improved, remote P-TTL flash units can now be controlled using the built-in flash, and the camera can now be directly controlled by a computer. Make sure reviews include these recent firmware updates in their evaluations. Image quality, especially using either Pentax or Adobe DNG RAW image formats (JPEG is default), is impressive all the way up to ISO 1600. Some noise is present from ISO 800 through ISO 1600, but not excessive (roughly par with most mid-range semi-pro cameras). The included software handles both JPEG and RAW image formats with ease. The camera's built-in shake reduction (image stabilization) system works with any lens ever made for the Pentax. Well, first off, I must say that this is an amazing camera.It is packed with features that make it extremely useful. Iespecially like the ability to take pictures in Adobe DNG.The Pentax optics are extremely good. However, the choicesare limited. I really wish that they had a good long telephoto.Image quality is excellent, but there is some fuzzinessaround the edges. Now I'm not sure whether this wasintentional or not (some people think that Pentax was tryingto get the look of film)... I personally prefer a sharperimage, but I can deal with it. The best way to avoid this isto take in RAW. I'd recommend an SD card of at least 4 GBand to get 2 or 3 of them (133x or 150x). I understand thatit's a lot of money for those cards, but if you get anythingless, you will suffer in the long run.In terms of lenses, I'd go with a Pentax lens. Pentax hassuperior optics and amazing quality for a decent price. Ifyou go the third party route, make sure you know what youare doing when you buy it. This camera

First of all I want to congratulate again the good people atB&H Photo for a clockwork prompt delivery (7 days to my homecountry, despite being announced my order would be delayedwaiting for the lens).Next I want to congratulate Pentax for a great camera. Imagequality is near perfect up to ISO 600, all the feature workclose to specs, weather sealing allowed me to shoot in rain(some pretty good pictures too).The thing that blew me away was the ease of use. A lot offunctions have dedicated buttons and switches that just fallunder your fingers (RAW button, AE lock, special functionsmenu separate from main menu to hold usual suspects like WB,ISO, flash and shooting mode, metering, Shake Reduction andsome others). Two wheels have selecting items down toextremely easy.For glass I chose Sigma's 17-70mm DC Macro. It's much betterthan the kit and gives you some latitude.Shake reduction works, giving you an extra 2, maybe 3 stopshead start but that doesn't eliminate the need for fast lenses.I'm guessing

Enormous value--weatherproof and up to pro standards, withlots of high quality Pentax glass available. Not really abeginners camera, and you need to read the manual. Leaving this camera on Program or Auto defeats thepurpose and there are D40's and Rebels and the like youwould do better with if you want just simplicity. Also, RAW mode gives max quality, and hereagain, most rank amateurs prefer jpegs. White balance isone area that RAW makes easier. This is a camera to use inaperture mode for maximal creative results. Maximizes goodglass, and here again, Pentax has some of the best but veryslim pickings yet from them for telephoto fast glass forwildlifers. For that, look to Sigma and the others, butmany of the other guy's lens either don't work or don't haveultrasonic models for Pentax yet, but they are working on them.

There are some really great details on this camera that make it a true photographer's tool:First the construction is excellent. I have been using Canon and Minolta DSLR cameras for about four years, and this one is as sturdy if not more so than the others. Gaskets, locking access covers, and a better-fitting battery grip make this camera more impervious to the elements. The best part about the grip is the fact that it will fit in a camera bag on its own without the battery compartment extension(Canon) taking up a lot of room. There are even well-designed places for an extra SD card and remote. Very smart solutions to problems that really annoy me in the Canon.Functions are clearly labeled, and easy to read for people with poor eyesight. The Canon 10D and 20D menu lists are very difficult to read. The size of the monitor helps, too. I purchased a K10D a month ago and have done lots of available light shooting. The K10D controls are very easy to negotiate quickly- very intuitive- and the anti-shake feature give incredible low-light performance- without noise! The solid construction, high moisture resistance,anti-shake, auto- sensor cleaning, and control layout and function are great features. I looked at and used a Nikon D80 AND a D200, and considered the more (for now) extensive range of designed for digital lenses Nikon offers, but for a total package of build quality, performance, and price- the Pentax is aclear winner in my opinion (despite what Pop Photo says!).

I'm so glad Pentax has a winner in the world of digital. The firm is very sensitive to the habits and needs ofphotographers, including budget concerns. Off the shelf, Ican use my medium format lenses, with real manualfocus--a long, smooth focusing helix, with tactile feedback, metal barrels and glass. Adapter K is necessary. Ilove my Pentax 67II and usually bring it along . . .Effective focal length is greater. For example, my 300mmf/4 becomes a 450mm f/4. I get sharp images at 1/30th of asecond, and the metering is accurate. Pentax antishake isin the body and it works as advertised, to great advantage. I also like dedicated DA series lenses. Autofocus is sometimeshelpful when shooting sports, as is continuous operation at3 fps. It's cheaper to build glass that produces a smallimage circle, and inexpensive DA lenses incorporate ED glassand aspherical elements. Image quality is excellent, andso are materials and construction. I have been a owner of Pentax cameras for almost 15 years, in the beginning I had to buy second hand manual focus cameras and lots of old lenses, later I bought the Z1P and bought lenses for this camera as well in addition to the old ones which I could also use.I have been waiting for Pentax to release a decent DSLR like the K10D, which gives me the same manual control as the older models and the benefits of a Digital camera.Moving from the old models I am very pleased to see that ALL my old lenses functions perfectly with my new K10D which means that my investments that I made 15 years ago still are usable.This would also be a perfect camera for a student that can buy the camera and buy old second hand lenses to use with it to save money.

Just let them know how much MORE your K10D does than their choices!Face it, since the D80 and Rebel XTi and even Sony Alpha 100 are all in the same basic price range, YOU would have a LOT MORE features. The K10D is a camera with fit, finish, and features that put it in league with the D200s and 30Ds, but at a MUCH lower price point!Not that I'm implying you shouldn't compare the offerings from the competition, but if your needs and budget point towards the Pentax, go ahead and BUY IT! For the extra couple hundred it is worlds...dare I say galaxies!...better than the Canon Rebel; the camera all your friends told you to buy. Ignore your friends as I did...and BOY am I glad I did! I got more camera than the Rebel and every bit as much, if not more, than the 30D.So, once you tell them what your K10D does, it'll be their turn to be put on the defensive, not yours for not buying into the world of the big two. Have fun watching them squirm!

This is a most wonderful upgrade. Had the istD from its introduction. Had the K10D since its intro also. Hundreds of photos shot to-date. Items to clarify: Specs state 9 shots in continuous RAW mode, I typically get 12 in RAW. The Best feature so far is the Auto ISO. I set the aperture, for depth-of-field and let the camera pick the Speed and ISO for the best shot, for those where I'm losing light fast, etc. Pictures are not as 'soft' as the istD so little sharpening is needed in post process. Love the DNG RAW file format! The anti-shake is great and affords at minimum 2 stops greater freedom (handheld macro shots). Major package and great upgrade to my istD.

This camera is SUPERB!! Just holding it in your hands, you know you have a quality piece of equipment. It has some nice weight to it, giving it a good solid feel. All the controls seem to be in exactly the right place. Nice large bright viewfinder! The metering system is right on the money and the image quality is just brilliant. Beautiful color rendition, razor sharp images. I like the improved sharpness adjustments over the istD. When shooting vertically, the camera automatically rotates the image and, when the vertical images are opened in photoshop, they are automatically rotated for you!!! What a time saver!!! I love it. The shake reduction system works wonderfully, I have shot handheld at 1/10sec with great results. The addition of the 100 ISO is a big plus for me as well. (the istD lowest ISO was 200) The 1/180 sec. flash synch speed is also a valuable improvement and, when using longer shutter speeds, the image transfer times are also much faster than the istD. Extremely solid feel. All system adjustment knobs and wheels transmit a sense of positive decent and quality construction.Menu use not overly required to accommodate functions.Image resolution and color are superb with well controlled noise.Hope for a flash program change to allow wireless operation with only one off-camera unit.Love it!

I have been using Pentax gear professionally for thirty-fiveyears. I was a bit concerned that they'd miss the digitaltsunami, but the original D lived up to my expectations.After that, a series of lesser cameras with the same sensorseemed to be the only choice. I wouldn't give up the twocontrol wheels and the more professionally oriented controlset in genera. Worried again, I had a fortune invested inglass and I was not anxious to buy it all again in anotherbrand. Then comes the K10D. At last, a professional Pentaxdigital, with two control wheels, and instead of all thoseconfusing picture modes a couple of truly innovative newsensitivity modes. I bet a lot of engineers are thinkingDUH, why didn't I think of that?.An added benefit is the shake reduction. And my old M 50mmf/1.4 is still plugging away, it's now my main portraitlens. The shake reduction is a special bonus, and you canset it to work with your old glass. The battery grip and the size of the camera are more to myliking

Ever since I purchased my Pentax SF1 in early 1988I've been waiting for this camera. The Pentax K10D is by far the camera that every pentax owner who has stuck with the pentax system has been waiting for. I just purchased the camera and have not yet tested out every single nuance of the camera but i can tell you that this is truly a feature laden,capable SLR. This is not a camera for the Novice, but if you already own and have mastered the entry level camera then this Pentax is for you.

I've owned Pentax SLR's for 42 years. I waited skepticallyfor their first DSLR, but was soon won over by the istD. It was and is an amazing camera. From the first picturestaken with my new K10D I saw how much finer this camera is! Its added pixels record details I could not have gottenbefore. Its new programs -- SV and TAV -- seemed gimmickyfrom promos and reviews, but they add flexibility I neverhad in any film camera. They represent the discovery thatDSLR'sneed not be plain old SLR's with added bells andwhistles and ways of recording shots. Still, I wonderedabout the changes in accessories, batteries, memory cardsfrom my istD (all incompatible); but the K10D is not anupgrade, it is a new camera! For a price of about 20% lessthan its predecessor, the K10D is a lot more camera. Wow! Thanks, Pentax.
