HP 30b Business Professional Calculator
Pros: Excellent keyboard, Great functionality
Unfortunately, I have to report that this calculator and it's predecessor, the HP 20B have a bug. The depreciation schedules give incorrect results. If partial year beginning months are used the results will be inaccurate and not even sum to the value of the asset. Additionally the RBV/ RDV will be off as well. These units also seem to calculate incorrectly when using DBXover. They will calculate the initial accelerated correctly, but when making the change to straight line, the depreciation numbers are off.
Declining balance also seems to be off. I can actually get a last year depreciation number that is larger than the previous year. Perhaps the worst aspect of this: the depreciation does not sum to the value of the asset. Anyone relying on these numbers each year is losing money. HP should be ashamed. Bad numbers for TWO generations of calculators?

For the sake of credibility you should know that I am not a novice. I verified these numbers against other HP calculators, and other manufacturers. (I own every current model of financial calculator). I'm a financial consultant.

If you decide to ignore the depreciation bug, (I will say that I have not found, and am not aware of any other bugs)I would recommend the 30b over the 20b. The 30b has a superior keyboard and more functionality. If you want a menu driven calculator without the worry of bugs, I recommend the TI BAII PRO. I have used it for years; it is bug-free to my knowledge, and is accepted for major exams such as the CFA exam. It's excellent.

HP 30b Business Professional Calculator
Pros: Adequate Capabilities, Clear Display, Quality Construction
TVM and Cash Flow calculations are smooth and easy. Register value indications are improved over the HP 10b. NPV and IRR are a snap. Not as feature-rich as the HP 17bii, but also half the price. Well-worth the incremental price over the HP 10b, IMHO. Well-made, sleek new design, fast with a legible display and satisfying keyboard. Cannot complain.
