Polk Audio RC60i In-Ceiling / In-Wall Speakers (Pair, White)

I bought these speakers to replace a speaker that had started to go out. I had a set of Infinity ERS110 speakers on my patio, 1 of them started getting static (6 years old) so I did some research and bought these Polk speakers. I bought the pair just incase the other Infinity goes out. Ease of installation was perfect, it fit into the existing hole and I had it in place and playing music in less than 5 minutes. The problem is that it is very thin sounding compared to the Infinity. I left the working Infinity in place and installed 1 Polk in the broken Infinity's place. You can definitely tell the difference between the 2 speakers. The Infinity is much louder and has more base. Clarity on the Polk is good, I just wish it had more substance. As they are outside speakers I am not too concerned, I'm sure my neighbors will appreciate the quieter sounds, but if I was installing them inside for my TV or stereo I would definitely spend more money and choose another brand or style. I got these for my whole-house audio system. Initially I installed them in each of the rooms, in the ceilings. I ran my Yahama 6-channel stereo amp through switch boxes, to the volume controls, then to the speakers. The switch boxes aren't really necessary, FYI... if you have volume controls, you can just turn the volume off in a room and that room won't draw any power. Its nice for upstairs speakers though, I can turn off my bedroom speakers without having to go up there to mess with the volume controls. Anyways, I mounted them initially with no insulation in the floor joists. They sounded tinny and there was no bass response. I then took the time to put insulation batting in the joist surrounding the speakers, and the difference was huge. They still don't sound like bose, but they have good bass response and decent highs. The directional tweeter is a plus, you can direct it towards the middle of the room so it doesn't just put the highs to the floor below. My volume controls

I recently installed three different ceiling speakers at three very different price points in three different rooms connected to my "b" output on my Denon amp. I use all of these at moderate volume levels to listen to TV or music. Monoprice 8" Kevlars in my carpeted master bedroom - $59/pair! Polk RC80i in my tiled bathroom - $129/pair Speakercraft AIM 7 three in my small tiled kitchen - $299/pair! (by far the lowest price I saw on these) I installed all of these in my attic. I placed plywood across the studs directly above the Monoprice and Polks but did not enclose along the sides (so there is not a complete box enclosing the speakers - although there is insulation enclosing those open sides). I did this to ensure that the sound wasn't getting lost in the attic. The speakercrafts are already enclosed. I purchased a cheap speaker switch through which I can turn on or off the speakers in each room. I also tried to install in wall volume controls in each room. I purchased 4 Pyle

I was looking for surrounds for my new 7.1 theater in the basement. I spent way too much on the front 3 and sub, so I was looking for a way to cut back a little without sacrificing too much in sound. Fortunately, these low end Polk RC60i speakers fit the bill perfectly. I have heard some other in ceiling speakers in this price range and was wary of what the competition was offering. I was pleasantly surprised when I had these Polk RC60i speakers installed and hooked up to my AVR. Now, although they are rated for 20-100 watts per channel per the Polk Audio website, my AVR pushes 140 WPC @ 8 ohms and the RC60i's handled the extra power flawlessly. Before I had the entire 7.1 system installed, I ran a pair of these as the fronts and was able to turn the volume up quite loudly without any audible distortion. Installation was easy (I bought a drywall "circle cutting" tool from Lowes that made things a LOT easier). The most important steps occur BEFORE you cut the drywall. Plan and mark

I was being cheap and got these speakers. They're good for the price, but they only have mid-range responses. So you must have a good Center speaker and a sub woofer to go with these! Otherwise you'll have a hard time hearing what people are saying (the highs) or feeling the thunders (the lows).

I'm giving these speakers a 1 star only because there are so many 5 star ratings that isn't deserved. Otherwise I'd give these speakers a 3 star.

I purchased a set of these from Amazon for a surround sound based on the many recommendations. Because they come in pairs I stopped off at the local Fry's store to buy a single center speaker to complete the set. Fry's had all of the Polk series setup in their sound room so I compared them. After listening the RC60i, and then listening to the TC60i I have to say I regret buying the RC60i. The TC60i makes these speakers sound flat and the quality approaches that of a mid quality boom box while the TC60i sounds fantastic. The salesman told me that the RC60i are Polks entry level ceiling speaker.

If you can afford the extra money and are installing into the ceiling, buy the TC60i. If you are mounting in the wall stay with the RC60i as they are not as deep.

Another consideration too is that if you are putting these in the ceiling and have blown

I purchased these last December, 2007 from Amazon and after all these months I have been completely satisfied with the Polk Audio brand. I will agree with the others that the included templates make a tight fit. It is not to much more work to slowly chisel away to get that perfect fit though. I never did anything like this before and I'm completely amazed of the outcome. You can't go wrong with the template, just make sure you go in the attic and clear out any insulation that might fall on you.

This was my setup for the home theater and my wife and I are completely happy with the sound, look, and would purchase Polk Audio again.

Front: RC80i
Surround: RC60i
Back Surround: RC60i
Center: CS1

Bought as ceiling surround-rear drivers for a 7.1 home theater. Very good timbre for such a price point. Good match for Polks RTi series. Be careful removing the steel grilles. DO NOT do what Polk suggests by using a paper clip. I did and spent time with a body-buck and hammer flattening out the distortion the paper clip caused. You might as well use an axe! There are four clamp-screws that need to be accessed from the front. Use these four screws to gently push the grill out from behind. Once you get the grill out a quarter-inch, you can peel it out the rest of the way from the front. Hope this prevents the a little aggravation. Buy these speakers.

I bought 2 pairs of Polks for in ceiling stereo use over my bar area I am building in the basement. I'm a first time Polk buyer and in ceiling user and I am impressed at the audio quality. I am also using the other pair as the back surrounds in a 7.1 home theater system. Polk has a huge following in the AV forums so I was confident these would work for me. I also listened to them in the electronics store prior to buying through Amazon. To maximize the sound quality, Polk recommends you place a modest amount of a sound absorbing material, such as Polyfil (a synthetic cotton-like material found at craft/fabric stores) inside the cavity before installing the speakers. This will absorb the rear moving sound wave and reduce mid range coloration. I haven't done that yet and they still sound great!

For the low price of under $100, these are superb for a single purpose. For us, that purpose is soft, quiet background music in a formal dining room that is not used very often. If you intend to play louder or try to fill a room or section of your house, these speakers will not do well. They get muddy at higher volumes and do not have good bass.

But, for a small space where you only need background music, these can't be beat for the price. Once your hole is cut, these install easily. Cutting the hole is a project in and of itself. Be careful!

Just got this installed last week. The speakers have a neat little clip for easy mounting in a drywall ceiling. The templates provided are accurate and easy to use. Took about ten minutes each to install. I spent much more time running the wires through my attic, but I obviously cannot blame that on the speakers. Now that they are installed, all I can say is wow. The sound is crisp and clear. The aimable tweeters gives you a lot more flexibility in your mounting location. As with any speaker, sound is a matter of personal preference. I have noticed that these speakers seem to impress people that are a little older (like mid 30's and up) more than the younger crowd. I suspect it is because the younger ears can hear the higher frequencies better. I have always enjoyed the crisp highs that I have gotten from Polk Audio. Once again they have been able to impress me.

I mounted these in my ceiling just behind my sofa. I intended these to just be rear channel speakers, but I they sounded good enough that I am sending my stereo through them now.

Installation was simple and I had them out of the box and playing music in under 20 minutes. The biggest hassel was cutting the hole and trying to avoid the insulation!

I am considering buying another pair to put on the back patio and would recommend these to even my best friends.

I shopped around for similar speakers at local shops and places like Best Buy and Circuit City. All others were way over priced. The Polks were a great buy. I use them as the rear speakers in a surround sound. They sound great. The speakers come with a cutout template and a template to mask the speakers if you want to paint them. They were very easy to install. A very nicely designed speaker. I'm very glad I purchased them from Amazon.
