I replaced a linksys BEFSR81V3 FW 2.45.5 with this RVS4000. Updated factory default to the latest FW and IPS and then configured to match replaced router.
The first thing that happened is that it locked up while doing a scan of the LAN from VPNing in. Had to have the client do a power cycle to get it back.
I had set up email logs to monitor behavior and started to receive many errors. Contacted linksys tech support, actually connected to Cisco product manager, to findout what the errors are and if it would cause a lockup at the client's site. Said it would be corrected in the next FW release, but didn't answer if it would cause a lock up or not. My impression is that their attitude was that they really didn't care (no offer of beta FW release or things to mitigate the lockups) and attempted to pin the "blame" on the load at the client's site. The old BEFSR is a faster router and more reliable than an RVS4000?!
It locked up again during normal use, usage is very light, and had to power

I bought this router to set up VPN for a business client. I thought a Linksys router off the shelf would be a simple working solution. The customer needed to attach remotely with an XP laptop using a DSL connection. I set up the router behind a completely open Netopia router from the ISP. The ISP's Netopia router was set up as bridge only. I installed the Linksys QuickVPN client. The QuickVPN client wouldn't work. After 2 weeks on the phone with Linksys it was still not working consistently. It did work 1 time but quickly failed to work. They finally escalated it to another level where they were able to replicate the problem in the "lab". The only criteria were the Linksys router must be set up behind an open DSL router. Likely, this is the most common configuration of all. It must not have been tested in this configuration prior to release. ??? So, they escalated it to another level and sent it to engineering. They can't give me an ETA and don't know when they can even start troubleshooting.

There isn't a problem with this router, it works fine, however, if you are using Windows Vista you are in trouble. This is because Linksys still hasn't resolved why its QuickVPN software won't connect with Vista. So, if you are buying the VPN router hoping to connect to your office, watch out. QuickVPN doesn't work and despite Linksys (Cisco)'s giant size--their engineers cannot solve the QuickVPN problem.
They should disclose this to you before you buy the router. This is why I am writing the review--to warn the next buyer.

An old Linksys fan since 1995. Great success with their products and excellent tech support until circa 2003, after which every Linksys product I had then is still working flawlessly. But I wanted to try VPN, and the RVS4000 seemed the perfect solution. Considering the negative reviews on Amazon and that the only good ones did not relate to VPN, and not wanting to buy something suspicious from Amazon, I paid more to get it from Best Buy. Which means Best Buy will be the one to get it back face-to-face !!
THIS THING IS pure JUNK !!! Just getting onto internet was Ok, but it took TWELVE HOURS over THREE DAYS on the phone with Tech support before THEY could "see" the VPN connection themselves. The tech people in the Phillipines(?) were GREAT - very patient, even emailed beta-firmware (1.1.13) which DID make a difference - once we saw the tech notes warning the XP firewall had a defect - which I disabled.
So, the VPN server connection was open waiting for a client.

Got this to firewall an Internet service and its been working great! The Built-in IPS (Intruder Prevention System) seems to catch a lot of attacks, so that part is good. Setting up VLANs (Virtual LANs) is a snap and seems to work great. The IPSec VPN really only works right with the Linksys QuickVPN software, but its easy to install and if you follow the directions, works great the first time out. This box is overkill for just a home network, but for us SOHO users with data that we need to access while mobile, its a champ! Now if it only have VIP (Virtual IP) so I could set up some Highly-Available servers.... Documentation is rather sparse in my opinion, so its not a good choice for a net n00by to set up.

From the Linksys Quick VPN Client 1.2.5 release notes (current version), "QuickVPN Client v1.2.5 has an interop issue with RVS4000 firmware v1.1.09 and v1.1.11 (beta).".
From what I can tell, this router simply doesn't provide VPN capabilities as advertised. The current firmware and current VPN client are incompatible and have been for several months. It's well documented on the forums and linksys tech support (from my experience) cannot help. If you can some how get your hands on a 1.0.x version of the firmware you might be OK, but linksys won't provide it.

I purchased 2 RVS4000 routers to replace existing linksys routers in place, I have 3 locations which require a VPN tunnel, one location doesn't have static IP so I was going to configure it with the [any] IP option under the 'Remote Group Setup' soon discovering it was missing. "Unlike my older model-[BEFVP41] that had this option", reading the built in help within the router to confirm this, it reads...
Remote Security Gateway
Select the desired option - IP address or "Any". If the remote gateway has a dynamic IP address, select "Any".
... so after reading this I called linksys. A tech worked with me through a backup-restore-firmware-reinstall. Then the Linksys tech then connected directly to my RVS4000 and couldn't get it to work either. He came back after talking to a Sir. Tech explaining to me that the unit was defective and should be returned (since I just purchased it that day). If interested the call number is ref#070713-009118 tech# (John)-13204

The entire reason I bought this router is for VPN capability and it doesn't work. The client is proprietary, from Linksys, and at random intervals (less than every few minutes tho) it errors with "Gateway not responding." It's just not functional. I've swapped it out twice (Linksys thought it was a hardware problem) and ALL of the units I've gotten have the same problem. Good luck with this one.

I've had this Linksys RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN for a little over two weeks now. I had no problem setting it up and I've had no problems with it operationally. My old Belkin F5D8230-4 Pre-N Router would freeze up every three or four days. This RVS4000 has worked continuously without problem. A couple of very important points, though:
- First, there's a firmware update available on Linksys' site (v1.1.09, dated 02/21/2007). Apparently, this update fixes quite a lot. So much so, that after installing it you MUST reset to factory defaults. So, make sure you update the firmware first thing, and then reset. Don't use any old setups.
- Also, Linksys doesn't seem to care about U.S. Daylight Savings Time having changed. That new firmware, though released just prior to the change, doesn't use the new dates. So, even though the router has a synchronization option and a DST option, I had to turn those off and set the time manually.
- Regarding ease of setup, I'm not

Fairly easy as far as VPN routers go, good directions and intuitive interface. Also pretty cheap considering it has gig interfaces. I set 3 of these up for remote administration and had all of them going within an hour.
