Php sort in order in differnet colums.

Using php, how can I sort the root directory into four columns? Each for different file names?
All of the files are in the same directory.
Looking to list the following files in their respective columns, Sorted with most Recent on top:
temperature-2012-*.php
dimmerrackAmps-2012-*.php
dimmerrackVolts-2012-*.php
dimmerrackTemp-2012-*.php

I know how to show all directory. and omit "." and "..". (as seen in the below pages) but I can't figure out how to get sort($array) to work right. And then list it with the most recent on top.
